A colored preacher ends a sermon on salvation being free and requests a collection for his family. A brash churchgoer questions paying for salvation, leading the preacher to illustrate with water piped to a home. Salvation is free, but piping it to you costs.

The Brimfield township commissioners warn the public not to dump rubbish along the public road east of Brimfield near Clark Corner under penalty of prosecution. The law enforces penalties from three to ten dollars for depositing weeds, trash, or offensive material on roads, with exceptions for proper road repairs in good faith.
Joseph N. Dawson born October 11 1840 Irefield township Peoria county Illinois died November 14 1909 at 7 pm at the Soldiers Home Quincy Illinois aged 69 years 1 month 3 days. He lived near his birthplace most of his life later moving to Elmwood then Peoria and Rock Island. He married Sally Smith November 10 1861 at Kickapoo Illinois and they had six children three living Flora Coulter Harry and Leonard. He served in Co B 77th Illinois Volunteer Infantry enlisting August 6 1862 and mustered July 10 1865 taking part in seventeen actions including Vicksburg. He united with the M E church at Oak Hill and was a devoted Christian worker. Mrs Dawson died December 18 1907 in Peoria. The Elmwood Gazette
