Southport Community Notes Last Week’s Visits

George Martins visited Dr. H Wickwire in Ipava Sunday morning. Dr. G J Wickwire called on Mrs. Della Wickwire Thursday evening. Delbert Johnson and wife of Elmwood called on Wickwires Saturday. Harold Norten and Helen Briggs of La Fayette visited Mrs. Edith Moran Thursday. Mr and Mrs Forrest Wight and Mrs Hazel Bale visited in Southport Saturday. Roy Griggs and daughter and Mrs Fuller from Elmwood spent Saturday night at Marry Driskell home. Maude Shaw and children returned to Astoria Monday after a week with Frand Wickwire. Garry Driskell and family and Roy Briggs and family from Ellawood went to Wisconsin Monday to visit parents of Driskell and Briggs. Willard and two daughters and Mrs John Smith of Wichita Kansas visiting Grandma Martinland. Willard left for Princeville Monday. A family reunion was held at Mrs Frank Wickwire’s with 2 grand dinners. attendees included Mrs Maude Shaw, Mabel Willard, Frances Rowland of Astoria, Lowell Penn and daughter Corl, Charlie Marizul, Warner Panard Rosland, James Wces and Serbert Wekeire and families.

Bandits Rob Laura State Bank

Four bandits robbed the Laura State Bank just before noon on a Wednesday, taking about 1600 dollars. Three men entered while a fourth waited in a blue De Soto. Elliott and Barrett were ordered to lie on the floor as guns were used, then the robbers fled with reachable cash. Frank Riel fired at the getaway car as it passed the garage, drawing a traceable mark. No injuries reported, unknown if anyone was bitten.

French Grove Angus Moore took hogs to the Peoria market Saturday. Many from the neighborhood attended the Williamsfield Homecoming. The Angus Moore family visited Mrs Sadie Huff at Wyoming Saturday. The Carter and Kellogg families enjoyed the Century of Progress. Visitors included Mrs Bryson Smith of Arkansas City and relatives from Altona and Princeville. The Melva Clesson family attended Yates City Harvest Home. Alta Mae King visited. The Oakes and Ruth Ann attended the 1d Settlers picnic at Princeville. Bert Long and Mel érott visitors in Hampton and Alexander. LeRoy Carter of Plymouth Ohio on a wedding trip visited relatives and dined with Harold Gelvin.

Elmwood Hosts Fall Festival With Diverse Entertainments

Elmwood will host a two day Fall Festival sponsored by the Elmwood Legion Post featuring an Elmwood band, readings, and multiple acts. Congressman Dirksen and Judge Mercer will speak on Friday and Saturday respectively. Jerry Havelka appears daily with the One Man Drum Corps, Pagini and Co present Magic and Illusion, Spironi Carnival offers diverse amusements, while afternoon games grant cash prizes.

Manx Reunion Invites Peoria District

Manx people and descendants are invited to a reunion at Bradley Park in Peoria on Sunday September 3. Attendees should bring picnic baskets and meet at the pavilion at 12 o'clock. The event includes plans to form a local Manx Association to preserve ancient heritage symbolized by the three legs emblem. Mrs J L Murdoch and guests attended a Smith Gibbs reunion in Monmouth with about eight family members from Iowa and Illinois, plus a J L Forney home gathering with a picnic. A separate Kelley family reunion at Glen Oak Park drew thirty four members including L O Kelley, W E Kelley, Elwood Kelley, Arthur Kelley, and others.

Mrs Zink Rites Held in Mt Pleasant Iowa

Funeral services for Samantha Whetzel Zink of Mt Pleasant Iowa were conducted at her residence on East Washington Street by Rev R V Pike. She was born May 20 1851 in Wheeling West Virginia and died August 22 in Mt Pleasant. She married William A Zink February 10 1875 and left eight children, ten grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. Burial followed beside her husband in Elmwood Cemetery with a short chapel service.

Schools Ready for Opening Next Week in Peoria Area

Peoria county teachers spend this week in institute as most local schools plan opening Monday with some delaying to Tuesday due to Labor Day. Brimfield lists teachers by grade, with many named staff at nearby campuses. Brimfield band and ball teams traveled to Princeville for games while notable Homecoming events drew crowds from Williamsfield and Yates City.

Families from Kickapoo attended a taxpayers picnic and noon band concert. The Kickapoo kittenball team defeated Kapoo 13 to 2 in a standout local game.
