First Burt farm pickles shipped to Peoria amid 1895 notes

Manx Picnic Draws Manx Descendants to Peoria Park

About 100 Manxmen and descendants met for the annual gathering at Bradley park in Peoria. Attendees from Peoria and nearby towns enjoyed a picnic luncheon followed by a program and business meeting. Miss Eva Kelly reported on the North American Manx Association convention in Cleveland, with 93 year old W T Cowley sharing remarks. Cowley notes this year marks the 100th anniversary of the Cowley family migration from the Isle of Man. Association officers include Rev Craine of Princeville as president, Miss Alice Monier of Peoria as vice president, Gladys Carter of Brimfield as secretary, and Frank Shimmin of Peoria as treasurer.

An old tabulation analyzes automobile accident causes from a national survey. It lists 22 000 deaths and 607 000 injuries across 561 000 accidents, with many cases linked to drivers violating right of way, speed limits, or driving on the wrong side. Other causes include failure to signal, unsafe passing, reckless drivers, and miscellaneous reasons totaling 26 930.

Peoria County 4-H Livestock Show At Fair Grounds

The annual Peoria County 4-H club live stock show will be held at the Peoria fair grounds on Monday and Tuesday September 2 and 3. About 180 boys and girls will exhibit beef calves dairy calves lambs ewes and rams. Livestock arrives by noon Monday with dairy calves and sheep judged Monday afternoon pigs judged Tuesday forenoon and beef calves Tuesday afternoon. About 125 calves will be sold at auction after judging. Admission is free.

A young man circulating in farm communities, selling Country Gentleman and other magazines, is suspected of misrepresenting himself. He claimed ties to a relative of Mrs John Johnson Jr and implied medical student status, then moved on, altering his claimed relation per town. Residents fear they may have lost money to a recurring scheme. Curtis Publishing Company recently had a legitimate, credentialed representative in the area without such deceits.
