Rainy Old Letters Picnic Draws Wide Attendance

Despite heavy rain last Thursday the gathering drew visitors from far away and a large crowd, with prize winners including Mrs Clara Cady Phares and Eva Phares Fisher among many seniors celebrating birthdays.

Old Settlers Celebrate Nearby Born Silver Dollars

Two residents born within five miles of Brimfield received silver dollars at an Old Settlers program. Many attendees were interviewed on stage as part of the event, adding a lively interlude to the program.

Oldest settler, W. T. Cowley, marks 95th birthday

W. T. Cowley, who celebrated his 95th birthday on August 15, is noted as the community's oldest settler, having come to the area with his parents when a small boy.

Many Return Home From Picnic Across Regions

A list of attendees returning home from a regional picnic includes numerous families and individuals from Peoria Galesburg La Grange Williamsfield Moline Kewanee Rock Falls and other locales. The group features extended family pairs and several children. Fred Walliker plans to move to Michigan to begin work with the Herschel Company.

Village Clean Up Week Announced for August to September

Clean up Day runs from August 30 to September 3 with residents urged to parallel containers for cans and bottles in the alley or convened place. A truck will haul away the items on Friday September 3 by order of the Village President and Board of Trustees.

Library Closure Through August Ends August 31

The library will be closed for the entire month of August with no book exchanges. The last day open is Saturday, July 30, and normal operations resume September 4 as has been customary.

The Brimfield School Band performs Saturday evening in the park. The program features local artists from nearby towns and an amateur showcase. The Midland Bakery sound track will amplify the whole event.

Tuesday Registration Day At Both Schools

Tuesday August 31 marks registration for the high school and grade school at 9:00. Teachers will provide book lists and assignments, and 11 pupils should be present. County institute days follow Wednesday through Friday, with classes resuming Monday September 6. Rural high school pupils will have bus service on registration day.

School Band Busy All Next Week

Band instructor Fred McInnes reports the only opening in saxophone for the year is on baritone. If interested call McInnis Friday. The band performs twice next week: Monday a half hour concert in Delavan for the centennial, plus parade and massed-band concert. Thursday two concerts at Laura Homecoming and head the parade. Virginia Smith joins on alto clarinet, Ruth Carson started on clarinet, and Donald Hayes will substitute for the bass player at Delavan.

Corn Yarn Encounters Giant Ears Ensnaring Farmer

A farmer west of town investigated tall corn stories only to be trapped as corn ears grew rapidly and spread. After a light shower the field filled, pinning him down until he escaped by crawling to a weighted fence. He later plotted crib room with neighbors.

4 H Beef Calves Shown In Three Classes At Peoria Show

Three breed classes Angua Herefords and Shorthorns compete at Peoria County 4 H club show during homecoming on Sept 1 2. Pigs dairy calves and sheep judged with auctions and championships planned. animals must be on site by noon Sept 1. Special arrangements for cats noted.
