Brimfield prepares for the fiftieth Old Settler’s picnic on Thursday August 19 with races contests two ball games Brimfield Williamsfield and Kickapoo ferris wheel auto rides and concerts by the Brimfield School band and the Minnesota Valley Blue Jackets A variety program features Ralph Manley from Knoxville the Buckaroos from Peoria Royal Kollera and the Bragg Twins A Community Building dance closes the day Local residents note Glen Shane has attended all fifty picnics and seek to learn who else will match this record

Old Settler's Day Crop and Brimfield Storm Update

Prices for corn oats wheat and butter appear alongside a description of a dustless oil treatment for a schoolhouse and a plan for a coaching parade. The Brimfield hail storm caused extensive damage to windows trees crops and buildings with half a million dollars in local losses and a pending army examination list of Brimfield youths.

4-H Club Plans Springfield Trip

35 members of the Laura Winners 4-H club met Monday evening August 9 at leader W. W Jones home. They discussed State Fair trips and the County 4-H show at Laura September 1 and 2. A bus trip to the State Fair leaves Laura at 6 AM Saturday August 14 with a stop in Brimnelad. Merle McKown and wife are chaperones. Five members showing calves depart Friday. Committees for the Laura Homecoming float and 2nd stand were named. Refreshments were served.

Denala Hayes Describes Music Camp at Interlocken

Denala Hayes portrays Interlocken Music Camp on Lake Wah-be ka-netta near Grand Traverse Bay. About 450 male youths travel to the site hosting rustic pine buildings, a grand stage, a library, hotel, and practice rooms. Directors include Joseph E. Moddy and Thaddeus P. Gidding. Perry Grainger will attend as pianist and conductor for the season. The program mixes study and sports with a total season cost of 200 dollars not including private lessons.

Laura Items recounts residents traveling to Des Moines Nash ville Peoria and Elmwood last week plus visits to Princeville Knoxville fair and Home Coming events. The Laura Grange picnic was held near Princeville on Aug 8 and Henry Kelley and Margaret drove to Olin Iowa. Lewis Batchelor died Saturday at St Marys hospital with Galesburg funeral services at Trethway Chapel Princeville yesterday.

Laura Plans Homecoming For September Parades And Games

Laura prepares a two day homecoming with parades ball games and contests on September 1 and 2. A platform program serves non sports fans while the Peoria County 4-H stock show and county girls 4-H Achievement day and style show add interest to the event. Laura expects a large crowd and invites attendees.

Dr S R Quigley Ruried In Tiskilwa

Dr S R Quigley a longtime Peoria optician died Friday in Billings Montana at age 90. Funeral services were held Monday in Tiskilwa with burial in the Tiskilwa cemetery. He had lived in Montana since retirement several years ago.

French Grove Residents Share Harvest Tales

French Grove residents attended the Knoxville fair and hosted visitors including Bobby Mills at the Wilbur Hasselbacher home. Several women called on Harry Reed, and E B Weems traveled from Newtopia Mo. The Clark family hosted a park picnic and threshing was nearing completion as harvest efforts continued with communal cooking and thanks for the large harvest.

Library Closure Through August Ends September Fourth

The library will be closed from August through September with July 30 serving as the last day for book exchanges until September 4. No books will be exchanged during August as has been customary.

Cusaty 4-H Beef Show At Laura This Year

Beef calves shown by Peoria county 4-H members at the Laura livestock show on Sept 1 and 2 will be sold at auction in the afternoon. R R Snapp of the College of Agriculture will place the stock before noon. Buyers from the Peoria livestock market will attend a committee dinner before the sale.
