A Republican congressional candidate plans stops in Princeville Chillicothe Elmwood Hrimfield Trivoli from October 8 to 14 to speak to residents. Local notes mention visits by Dr Lowe and W Ferguson, family moves, fair receipts down, court terms, and various community happenings.
Last Friday afternoon Afra Gill was absent when friends visited her home. They arranged a fine supper and Rev Eison in the name of Afra Gill presented silver, greens, dry goods, groceries, glassware and other items. About 40 attended and she enjoyed the surprise.
In 1833 William Metcalf left Richland Ohio with family to settle in Millbrook township now in Ashland. He built a log cabin near French Grove, 1834, becoming Millbrook’s first white settler. Amos McKill, then a teen, lived with them. Orin Metcalf joined later before serving in an Iowa regiment. The family endured long trips to mills at Big Creek and Ellisville, subsisting on corn bread and pork while worshiping at French Grove ME church.
In Elmwood Constable Burt arrests Mrs Brady before Justice Farrar. Doctor Doyle argues the common procedure and leads to a venue change to Justice Stewart. Witnesses are sworn, defense counsels abstain, Doyle presents evidence, Brady transferred to the client court amid strong local praise for Doyle’s handling. Sept 20, INTH, Rocnever.
Debating a planned game at Monica and accusations of hiring players from other clubs. A letter accuses rivals of betting disputes and offers to hire a catcher from Peoria with a $10 note. The writer questions why a local man would seek outsiders and hints at a $25 disputed payment and a $27 challenge.
The writer reports business improving since arrival, harvest half yield, corn shellers, and Indian Summer weather. He notes diverse villagers, asks about Frank Plummer or Lovett, and recalls Keyes passing through. A camp meeting near August 6 drew crowds. sermon from Acts 10 covered gossip and scandal. he remains skeptical of camp meetings but reflects on the experience.
A large intelligent alliance gathered last Sabbath at French Grove to hear the SOS Concert exercises. The singing and speeches were lively though some remarks were considered dull. Mr Todd of our vicinity married last week to a Smithville lady. a long life is wished for the couple. Prof J W Morris teaches the town school. Rev John Webster is ill with dyspepsia and general disability. Nightingale's school near town hosts 46 scholars. Merchants report good business. The writer visited Eugene, meeting Voc Miller Esquelaon Lee Tucker Lehman and others. A letter to Hon A B Campbell of Bloomington seeks temperance lectures here. Campbell is a leading temperance orator in Illinois. He is urged to visit and stir the dry ranks. JM Tifenberick to lecture at White Church Peoria County on Oct 12.

A county convention republished critique claims the sheriff abuses the office for personal gain and travels for rewards, though Hitchcock’s record backs his duties. The note calls the campaign document misleading and notes Democratic indignation amid local reaction. The page also advertises music pieces including the Strawberries and Cream Waltz and Grassland March from Lamartine, with prices and publishers.
