Last Wednesday night a severe wind and rain storm swept the area with frequent lightning. A dwelling on Joseph Clute’s farm north of town burned after being struck by lightning, with loss over 1000 dollars and $500 insured. John Wasson’s house had minor damage, James M. Smith’s barn burned, and a brick barn roof was lifted near Brimfield. A grain stack burned near Mesa of Justice, and corn was blown down in places. The storm extended into Illinois Indiana and Ohio with various damages noted in exchanges.

A Madeira born Protestant colony guided by missionary Kelly settled in Springfield and Jacksonville after leaving Romania. They number from 300 to 600, later 4000 across Sangamon Morgan Monard Cass counties. They plan a grand reunion on August 23 in Springfield with Kelly present. The settlers prosper, some amassing wealth and acquiring land despite remaining Moorish Berber blood traits and strong Christian virtue.
In Brimfield Illinois on June August 6 1878 the town council held a regular meeting. Items included wages for mill sleepers and labor and a resignation request from Police Magistrate F C Came which the council did not accept. The board rescinded a May 6 sidewalk vote and ordered a new timbered sidewalk from Wilson Barnes to the depot and from Moles corner to the depot. The session closed with adjournment and clerk J Biaxamny recorded the actions.
