Nannup residents report arrivals and departures with several couples returning from Perth and Fremantle. Allan Neverman and wife are welcomed home after their Perth wedding and honeymoon. Others plan moves or visit city departments, with several taking Monday buses to Perth.
Forty guests gathered October 13 at Beddellia School for Mr Gallop of Albany as he turned 70. A farm dainty tea featured Blue Leshnaulia arrangements, toasts, and a cake with 70 candles. Mrs Gallop led the poem and music followed, with Auld Lang Syne closing.
The Manjimup Road Board debated buying a 1 TD9 diesel bulldozer and a five ton tip-body truck to aid their works program. The committee urged action to avoid delays, noting grants could fund the purchase and avoiding rate increases. A private-operator arrangement and a metropolitan roller option were also discussed, with delivery expected in about a month.
Mr. Bovell praised the display showing what the district could produce and presented two pennants won by Nannup in recent Security Loans to Nannup Road Board chairman Mr Ss Ford. Mr K Tadrick, president of the Nannup Progress Association, thanked exhibitors and the public for support as show results were deferred to the next issue.
Nannup RSL Tonight formed a reception committee for new district settlers appointing local reps W Blythe J Dean and C Gilbert and outsiders Buckley A Pollock and R Hartnett. The meeting ended with a marrow supper. Blythe Trophy scores followed last Sunday.
Dallas Monday of Nannup won three titles at the local badminton tournament held last week. She claimed the ladies singles and ladies handicap singles, and partnered Phyllis Jesperson to win the ladies handicap doubles.
Mr L H Davies urged the board to fund local trials of a hormone compound Trichlorophenoxyacetic acid as a blackberry weedicide. Reports from an eastern States paper claimed rapid blackberry death within three weeks with no regrowth at eight months, though non selective and harmful to other plants. Supplies were priced at 7/18 to £7/18/8 per gallon with one gallon per acre used. the vermin inspector is authorized to purchase a suitable quantity for local tests.
Kirup Rifle Club staged a 500 yard two burst practice during ideal conditions. Ted Buchanan won the Balingup Rifle Club event though the shooting fell short of prior performances under similar conditions.
Last Sunday the Jarrahwood Rifle Club fired the third stage of the W. H. Sharp Trophy over the 500 and 600 yard ranges.
