A Bridgetown resident reports two young men sought a room in a South-West hotel. The barman refused, claiming the beds were full and identifying himself as the boss. He mentions a possible theft of a cyclone stretcher and offers beds or mattresses if needed.
A city list records several May events including a public meeting in Town Hall on May 17 about a new school. Other gatherings feature Buffs Lodge on May 11 and multiple dances and social nights. Sporting notes include hockey and football events with matches in Bridgetown and nearby towns.
Four persons were seriously injured when a vehicle collided with a tree near Amo Warner's turnoff at Mullalyup. Passengers Harvey, Kelly, Mrs Larkin, and Jim Peremuan were all injured as the truck overturned onto its canopy. a passing motorist summoned an ambulance to Bridgetown Hospital.
Injured: Evelyn Larkin 87 single of Balingup. Stanley James Perejuan 24 of Balingup placed on danger list. Robert John Harvey 26 of Bulwer Street Perth with broken collar bone. Roderick William Kelly 27 of Clyde Street Mt Lawley. Truck is very extensively damaged.
Beasts bred by Mr. A. Blechynden of Manjimup, Aberdeen Angus and Shorthorn types, were shown at Midland Junction stock markets. Three consignments totaled 66 head, aged about three years, fattened on Glenpennant and Lonesome Valley paddocks and The Junction at the Perup River. Prices favored Shorthorns over blacks as many top blacks were sent as baby beef.
Perejuan remains in very low condition and unconscious. Harvey and Kelly are expected to be moved to Perth soon. Mrs Larkin is described as in critical condition.
A rabbit truck driven by Morris had a lucky escape when a tyre blew out and the vehicle skidded to a stop on its side against a tree stump on the Manjimup Bridgetown road between Wilgarup and Yornup. Morris was not injured.
Bridgetown traders report a 15 percent rise in monthly tobacco quotas since last Saturday due to a growing population of 2 610 residents. The measure aims to meet higher demand in the town with 2 610 people now counted.
A Saturday afternoon match at Bridgetown hockey ground between men and ladies ended in a 3 3 draw. The men, mostly inexperienced, learned from the opposition and formed motivation to pursue future fixtures. The ground condition improved after grading and burning off by the road board, aiding play.
School Sites Committee members Mr Hall and District Inspector Rourke visited Bridgetown on Friday to inspect possible sites for a new Bridgetown State School. They met the Bridgetown Road Board and toured several locations. A public meeting about the project is set for May 17 at the Bridgetown Town Hall with invited Minister for Education and local M P Mr E K Hoar.
Mr E Hester of Bridgetown was fined £5 with £2 6d costs for using an unlicensed motor vehicle. He pleaded guilty to running the De Lau ear without a valid licence. Prosecution by Bridgetown Road Board traffic inspector Mr Pearce. Proceedings before Messrs A E Bartlett and W L Owen JPs.
At the April 26 meet ing Mr. E. K. Hoar presented Bridgetown Road Board chairman with a pennant for the district’s loan success. Hoar noted Bridgetown had more than doubled its quota, while Mr. Mirogy and district reps urged fair returns for continued loans.
Warriors easily defeated Collie Centrals B grade at Bridgetown ground on Monday. The local team won convincingly as the visiting side struggled to keep pace in the final score.
A three day blaze at River Siding scorches a cinder pile and burns out a wooden culvert while trucks haul water to quell the flames. The incident coincides with a train derailment on the same day, tying up the same railway crew and leaving them exhausted.
An engine being shunted to the Bridgetown morning goods train derailed after striking a scotch block left on the line on Monday morning. No injuries reported and recovery operations underway near the yard.
President D. T. McClure of the Bridgetown Trout Society says 40 000 fry have been released since inception and 100 000 more are needed this year. He urges more youth involvement to sustain this stocking program and boost efficiency and funding for the movement.
Mr. Wally Elphick brought a new trail builder to Bridgetown costing about £5400. One of only four in the State it weighs over seventeen tons and runs at 120 horsepower. The machine, imported from America via Skipper Batley Motor Co, performed well on Bridgetown Hospital tennis courts and already has 20,000 acres of clearing work offered.
