A personal note expresses gratitude to friends and supporters for assistance and confidence shown on March 1, mentioning thanks for telephone and telegraphic signals. An advertisement from Shanahan, Treseaven & Co. Bridgetown 6 promotes the sale of a current model International Utility vehicle with 14,000 miles, long wheelbase, original tyres, and a substantial price reduction.
A large attendance enjoyed the St Patrick's Ball in Bridge ton Town Hall on Tuesday night. The Hovup Brook orchestra provided music and a well catered supper was served. Guests from Green bushes, Manjimup and Newup Brook wore a variety of elegant gowns and the evening featured a parade of named attendees in colorful attire.
A lone heckler at a campaign meeting asks costly education versus a large abdomen. The young candidate answers with sharp humor comparing spent funds to the heckler's lack of sense. In another Old Country tale a candidate jokes that his mother will know his result after election.
After weeks of campaigning in Nelsons election Mr J H Smith endorsed Nationalist was declared elected by a 249 vote majority over Labour candidate Roy Pearce. Returning Officer and staff received thanks for their handling as other candidates praised the process and signaled future attempts.
A Bridgetown tennis event held last Saturday saw Miss Ewing win the ladies division with 11 points while Miss G Meares and Miss Margaret Scott followed with 10 each. In the men’s group Stan Whead led with 12 points, Clayton Williams runner up with 10, and TF Williams WB, Abbots and Raymey also posted scores.
The death occurred on March 2 of Elizabeth Fletcher youngest daughter of Captain and Mrs G T Fletcher of Swatthorne but late of Bridgewen Ti. Funeral held privately in the Church of England portion at Karrukatta Cemetery.
The Bridgetown and Mullalyup parishes list Sunday March 26 services at Bridgetown 1 am, 2 pm at Mullalyup and Greenbushes 2 pm, with Sunday School at Boronia Gully 10 am and Bovup Bruk Hey at 11 am. Holy Communion at 4 am, Matins and Sermon at 11 am, Evening Sermon at 3 pm, and further services at Fremantle and environs in the afternoon.
Local Bridgetown society column lists residents visiting relatives in Bridgetown and Perth year dates. Entries include Mr and Mrs P H Peazes visiting their daughter, engagements announced for Violet Campbell and Freda Lilley, Ell ie Wyer visiting Perth, and multiple weekend house visits by Connell, Dean, Burley, and Rose. Social events include a March 25 Convent Hall gathering for Mrs M Cowley before her marriage, and a gift presentation to Mrs Rowe at a RSL afternoon.
A two carriage and guard’s van shunted on the main line for Perth jumped a point and careered down an incline at Northcliffe injuring three passengers, Mr Deverell, Mr E Hastie and Mr V Jones, who narrowly escaped.
