Tobacco leaf production boosts Western Australia output
A report presented at an Australasian Agricultural Conference in Canberra outlines Australia’s tobacco leaf production goals. It estimates 22 million pounds of cured tobacco consumed nationally, with potential to produce 4 million pounds in Western Australia from a current 800000 pounds. Growth hinges on leaf quality for tailor made cigarettes and establishing a fixed cultivation rotation with expert support and regional trials. A tobacco adviser will be stationed in Western Australia to assist growers and test new areas for suitability.
