Garden accident wounds Urquhart child at family plot

On a Saturday afternoon while digging in the garden Mrs Urquhart’s young son struck her younger brother with a spade causing a nose cut. Medical help was sought and stitches placed. Also noted is a Popular Baby Competition at Paddy’s Market on Friday July 2.

Eunice Hornby Charged After Farm Slaying Of Father

Eunice Mary Hornby aged 18 was committed for trial at the next sessions on a charge of wilful murder after she shot her father Walter Hornby on June 18 on his Hester farm. The inquest heard persistent family abuse by the decedent, with Eunice stating she acted to save her mother, and witnesses described a history of threats and fear within the Hornby household.

Donnybrook Association fielded a strong side and defeated Boyup Brook 16 goals 8 behinds to 3 goals 8 behinds at the Recreation Ground on Sunday. On Sunday Centrals hosted Rovers at home in a hard fought game. Centrals pulled away late to win 9.14 to 6.15 after leading at times, with Rovers keeping it close through the first half. Final scores show Centrals edge past Rovers despite a strong late push.

Repairs Required by District Engineer on Railway Bridge

The District Engineer notified the Bridgetown Road Board that the railway bridge requires repairs and urged Board attention. The foreman was instructed to attend. Dr. Neel Williams will visit Baling up Thursday afternoons 2 to 4 p.m. and Greenbushes Thursday afternoons 4 to 6 p.m.

Unlicensed truck fined at Bridgetown Court

J L Jones faced Bridgetown Police Court for failing to license his truck. The Bridge town Road Board brought the action, and Jones pleaded guilty. He received a fine of eight shillings and tenpence after a month in which to pay.

Bridgetown Road Board Allows Free Hall Use to Groups

At the Bridgetown Road Board meeting a letter from the Bridgetown branch of the CWA requested free use of the lesser hall for demonstrations. It was decided that free use in the afternoon would be granted to both the CWA and the Hospital Ladies’ Auxiliary when required. The Red Cross had already been granted similar access.

Bridgetown Road Board to Hire Meat Inspector

At a Bridgetown meeting the board discussed appointing a meat inspector for the district. A Perth enquiry report was received, opposition cited to taxing dairies, and it was decided to increase the health rate to cover inspector costs. Applications will be called at £312 per year, with the successful applicant to provide their own conveyance, and the entire Bridgetown Road District declared a health area.

Pumping Delays Prompt Criticism From Bridgetown Road Board

At Bridgetown Road Board Mr H Lake demanded action on the supplementary pumping scheme. He condemned the department for waste and delays, claiming millions of wallant were spent and supply would repeat last year's issues. The board decided to inform Mr T Coast MLAL.A. to urge decisive action.

Farewell to Pine Tree at Bridgetown Road Board

Mr Hester told the Bridgetown Road Board that the rite tree on Steere Street had outlived its usefulness and should be removed. He warned it could blow over and hit the cantilever veranda and the building opposite, endangering the street and power wires. The motion to remove it passed with Mr Machin’s support.

Walter Willis Road Proposal Before Road Board

Mr E Hester reported on inspecting the Walter Willis road proposal for board takeover. He said they have a strong case, the only alternative route is the abandoned one, and estimated works cost about £60. He urged Bowery to act with its own conditions and secure an agreement about river works.
