In the small plains town Smiley Greeving, labeled an outlaw, schemes to save for a bicycle with aid from Mr. Lambeth and travellers. His joy fades when school disciplines him for a hair incident, prompting him to seek reinstatement by helping an apiarist with beekeeping duties at the a whoelooster.
Smiley and the headmaster assess the apiary moved from the school grounds to a hillside site near water. The lesson centers on confidence with bees as Smiley, initially fearful, becomes steadier while the headmaster uses a smoker and veil to manage the hive. The community buys honey cheaply and bees rarely sting when not provoked.
Smiley wears a veil and faces a hive under the guidance of a schoolmaster Mr Stephens. Bees swarm the landing board as the master lifts the frame, driving bees down with smoke. A sting punctures the master’s hand, prompting questions about poison and danger.
Advertises Heenzo cough remedy priced at two shillings per bottle. Claims quick action for coughs colds croup bronchitis and influenza. Describes mixing with water at home to make a pint of remedy safe for adults and children and urges orders from street sellers or chemists.
