Jitneys will begin on new routes after an ordinance last Tuesday and a large meeting of bus men. John B. Schwartz says the company will obey the law while public pressure targets aldermen to remove restrictions. If no profitable routes exist after a trial, operations may halt. the public must decide.
Local Democratic delegates convene tonight in the office of Town Chairman John A. Cornell. The state convention will be in New Haven on September 7 15 and 16 to nominate a full state ticket and two congressmen at large. Mention is made of Wiarry Silverstone as a potential State Representative candidate from Wirideeport and efforts to bring former Ambassador Oscar Straus to speak at an early date.
Jamnet Arno, driver for a New York trucking firm, faced a hearing before Commissioner Lavery on charges of illegal transport of barrels of alcohol from New York City to Norwalk. The cargo was destined to J. A. Legato of Norwalk, a maker of patent medicines, who had purchased it from New York dealers. The commissioner found no intent to violate the law and discharged all parties. Also noted, United Steel Corp reports August shipments totaling 10,805,038 tons versus 12, etc.
A 74 year old man, Aimon Abraham, suffered injuries after being struck by a car on Redf Road in Fairfield. He returned home after treatment by Dr Maxwell.
A Times notice invites written identification of an unknown person and promises a $1 reward to the first accurate claimant. Participants must bring or mail their identification to the Times office.
The Times runs a photo ID contest for Mayor C. B. Wilson with a dollar for the first correct answer. Michael Greenstein of 155 Cap Hol avenue identified the mayor at 2 03 PM, and ten correct IDs are listed with times and names plus a separate $10 prize for the most pictures identified.
Superintendent Kibling of the Connecticut Company reports today that men are applying for motormen and conductors. The company announces tickets are on sale at the cashier and timekeeper offices at 15 for one dollar, allowing riders to save a discount on the fare.
Salvatore Santanello and Camio Gresso were jailed in Greenwich on illegal transport of Equor. A roadster wreck followed a gun draw as McCarthy enforcement officers pursued at high speed. One hundred quarts of liquor were seized. both men claimed Springfield, Massachusetts as home.
Bridgeport merchants and manufacturers join a pooled car system with Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce. A car will depart Bridgeport three times weekly carrying all small consignments, reducing delays for local institutions and firms.
In Milan on September 10 socialist deputies and leaders of the General Confederation of Labor met with representatives from the Federation of Metal Workers and employers to seek a compromise on the seizure issue. A section of metal workers opposes concessions and aims to expand agitation. At Ansaldo works 60 airplanes are ready to fly, with pilots prepared to operate between Milan and Turin, under the metal workers military organization led by Schiavello, described as a rabid revolutionist.
Charles Allen and nine patrons from the Adelphi club at 276een avenue faced a raid last Saturday night. Allen and eight others forfeited $100 bonds in City court this morning. The nine frequenters were arraigned by Judge Bartiett.
New York report says Gov. Smith will meet Samuel Gompers of the AFL and James Vahey of Boston, AFL counsel, to seek a solution to the Brooklyn Rams Transit strike. P. J. Shea, president of the local strikers' union, announced the planned talks.
Police have found no new evidence against Elwood B Wade and three defendants Mrs Ethel Nott John E Johnston and Wade remain in jail. Mrs Nott has returned to normal physically and visitors are limited to relatives on Wednesdays. Investigators continue to search Easton swamp for Wade's clothing to corroborate the case.
Olive Thomas, once a popular musical comedy performer and later a film star, died at the American hospital in Neuilly after mercurial poisoning. She reportedly swallowed a poisonous solution by mistake, with Dr. Joseph Choate treating the case. Thomas had arrived in Europe with her husband Jack Pickford amid reports of nervousness and depression.

Greenwich agents arrest six liquor smugglers over three days as drivers seek to move alcohol from Connecticut to Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Suspects include Schwartz of New Bedford with 84 quarts, Commandy of Boston with 120 quarts, Benelli of Woonsocket with 301 gallons, Lewis of New Bedford with 109 quarts, and Weinstein of Chelsea who yielded 6 quarts. all lacked permits.
Mrs. Margaret Burington, sentenced in Wisconsin federal court for mail fraud, was refused admission to Missouri State Penitentiary due to having a six month old baby. The federal commitment required the baby’s custody arrangement, but Missouri law bars incarcerating children in state prison. The deputy marshal was told to return her to Wisconsin and notify the federal court the baby cannot be admitted.
Special to The Times. At Hartford on September 10 Matthew H L Rogers formerly Secretary of State urged Lake to seek the nomination. Rogers with Lake and Seeley spoke in the Foot Guards Armory to push the plan. Delegates and operatives moved quickly as Ballard and other Roraback supporters tried to oppose the maneuver, but the upstate bloc failed to slow the Lake surge.
Henry Smith, 94 Frank Street, was treated by Dr Maxwell for a self inflicted wound last night. He attempted to cut from his arm the end of a broken hypodermic needle with a razor blade and made a bad cut.
The weather across New Haven and Connecticut is fair tonight and Saturday with moderate temperatures. A front moving from Illinois into western New York and Pennsylvania brings cloudy unsettled conditions with showers from Ohio to Maine and several thunder storms reported. In southern districts pleasant conditions prevail while winds remain west and moderate temperatures persist.
