Former Massachusetts governor and two term U S Senator Winthrop Murray Crane died at his Dalton home after a period of illness attributed to sleeping sickness. He was prominent as a silent leader and party mediator, noted for harmonizing Republican divisions and guiding key legislation through personal negotiations. He was born April 22 1852 in Dalton and spent his life in the family paper mills.

Bray was taken to the emergency hospital and treated by Dr. J. A. Maxwell.
