He walked a mile before meeting a track worker who aided him to a signal station. Doctors reported no serious injuries though antitetanus serum was given as a precaution. In Portland the Oregonian tabulation shows Senator Hiram Johnson leading Major General Leonard Wood by 510 votes for the Republican presidential preference as returns from about three-fourths of Oregon’s 1,701 precincts are counted. Johnson has 49,019 to Wood 40,109, with Multnomah County nearly complete. The tally also shows Governor Frank Lowden ahead of Herbert Hoover by 1,451 votes in the same contest, Lowden 14,487 and Hoover 15,026.

Train refuses to move after raid near Ballinamore
In Ballinamore Ireland on May 4 three men raided a house for arms and were remanded to Sligo jail. The engine driver refused to move the train carrying the prisoners, forcing police to detain them until a military lorry arrived. The town was heavily obstructed by trees and stones hindering entry and exit as the raid unfolded. A separate notice from Newton New Jersey reports the drowning of Ida Carpenter, 35, whose body was found in Culver Lake after she disappeared last Monday while returning from a nearby town. It is believed she accidentally fell into the water.
