Coliseum Chicago June 10 Republican National Convention recessed after a brief session as Senator Johnson announced the first assault of internationalism and bankers on the party had been met and defeated. The platform committee report and nominating speeches were arranged for later in the day.
The Argonaut salvaged the burned 200 foot Lexington hull lying over 100 feet deep between Midgie Ground and Penfield Reef. Divers found a large safe, captain believes hull is the old New York Providence liner with 1845 disaster leaving only one survivor.
John T. King retiring national committeeman from Connecticut says Sproul’s friends are not opposing any candidate and would seek to leverage a break among leading contenders for the presidential nomina tion. In New Haven, forecast calls for generally fair and slightly warmer weather tonight and Friday.
A morning gathering at City Hall followed John T Kings Chicago convention remark that Bridgeport will go Democratic by 5000 votes this fall. Mayor Wilson refused to comment while Aldermen Hamilton Connors Brown and other party figures conferred amid the outreach to halt intra county tensions.
The supply committee of the Board of Education meets at 5 pm this afternoon to discuss coal prospects for schools this winter. Local dealers, facing scarce supply, refuse orders and cannot quote prices, with coal now selling at $15 a ton and no orders being taken for fuel.
Lodge No 30 of the International Association of Machinists plans its first open meeting since restoration on Friday night June 11 at Plumbers Hall 542 Fairfield Avenue. Victor Gauthier from New York City will address the gathering and organizer Dan Donovan will speak. Former Lodge 30 members petitioned to restore the charter after opposing a movement against the AFL. The Screw Machine Operators Lodge has joined the reorganized Lodge 30 and Lodge 116 members may follow. Bridgesport IAM members may transfer into Lodge No 20 IA of M.
Senior High School girls demonstrated progress in home first aid and hygienic course work. The program covered sick care, baby care, accident aid, disease control and health habits. The course, run by Dr. L A Wilkes and Catharine Truitt, had 80 lessons this term and aims to prepare girls for emergencies. There will be a simplified course next term for eighth grade girls in the Little Mother's League. Embargo on car supply for coal movement ordered by the ICC effective June 13 restricts Lake Erie port shipments to one permit.
Chicago June 10 a league of nations plank drafted by Elihu Root was accepted as a basis of compromise by irreconcilables on the resolutions sub committee. The accord upholds Senate position and omits ratification terms while pledging a future league in line with American ideals and Washington principles.
A temporary injunction was granted by Judge Frank D. Haines restraining Anna L. Townsend from disposing of a one half interest in the Fairfield Avenue property. McFarlane Bros. Mfg. Co. seeks transfer back and seeks $5,000 damages plus a permanent injunction. The suit alleges the half interest was deeded to secure a $7,631 loan used to liquidate debts, and Townsend refuses to re transfer. The action is set for the September term of the Superior Court.
A joint inspection of all Connecticut Company lines started this morning. The party includes two Pul se Utilities Commission representatives, two Connecticut Company executives, and Bridgeport division manager Joseph Goodwin. They traveled from Stamford on car 500 and will visit zones for distance comparisons.
Four year old John Bachetola of 308 Willow street was hit by a Mu sant and Pastine Co truck driven by Joseph Daniel while crossing Con ee street. He suffered severe scalp lacerations and possible fracture, taken to St Vincent's Hospital after initial treatment at the trailer barn.
John Beres a 44 year old polisher of 679 Arctic street collapsed at his machine at Acme Shear Co shortly after 7 AM while at work. He had told colleagues he felt ill after visiting his family physician last night. Dr Samuel Garlick ruled death due to natural causes.
George Eckart a brewer of 128 Lindley Street was arrested Tuesday charged with violating General Statutes Section 4822 for possessing 436 bottles belonging to other firms. In City Court Judge Bartlett settled the case by a payment of 100 dollars plus about 59 dollars in search and seizure costs.
An 11 year old girl who ran away from her home on Wislm Street was returned from Brooklyn by Detective Malone and taken to the probate court after a debate on whether she should be tried in juvenile court. Gratia Rive condemned the action as unfair noting she has not been classed as a criminal. A gasoline barge arrived for the Water Company, with ten tanks moved from Jersey City to the dock due to rail transportation issues.
National Women’s Party members press at the Republican convention in Chicago calling on Vermont and Connecticut governors to call special sessions on the suffrage amendment. Mrs Abby Scott Baker decries dim prospects and vows sharper picketing, even risking arrests, to spur action.
General Palmer informs President Wilson that he has ten days after congressional adjournment to sign bills and resolutions. The rule could affect bills previously blocked by pocket vetoes, including the waterpower bill and the wartime relief resolution. The theft case of John Sheora and Michael Kiss, with Kiss in custody for drunkenness, was continued in City Court until Saturday.
Four year old ward McCloud suffered second degree burns at home when his trousers caught fire while playing with methes taken from the house. Dr Owen J Groark of the Emergency hospital treated the burns and the child was returned to his home.
Bridgeport players will be hosted at New Haven County jail this afternoon after a game with the Indians. Sheriff Reilly and Deputy Keating organize the visit to show appreciation for the deputies work. Ed Walsh, Bridgeport manager, is a deputy sheriff under Sheriff Reilly. Stevi Reilly, former New Haven manager, has faced difficulties and hopes the team stays focused after the Sheriff’s gesture.
The Michigan school system plans graduation events with 230 students to receive diplomas and 78 diplomas prepared for the class, while grammar schools report increases. Graduation exercises for June 22 will mark 725 graduates for the district, up from 597 last year, with final Normal school numbers due tomorrow per Supt. Slawson.
