Joseph S. Goodwin, manager of the Connecticut Co lines, says he resigns voluntarily to take a more remunerative position and denies any displacement or retirement. President Lucius & Storrs had no knowledge of a successor, and no appointment has been made.
Florence Micholski a 12 year old of 87 Caroline street was struck while crossing Strathford avenue near the Yellow Mill bridge by a Sullivan's Express Co truck driven by John Betz. She suffered a fracture of the right foot metatarsals and other minor injuries. Dr Coyle treated her at home and she was taken to St Vincent's hospital.
Aldermanic pay of 900 dollars a year faces funding doubts as Sigmund Laee, veteran Board of Apportionment member, says no unappropriated funds exist. Council discussion set for Monday may repeal or pass the ordinance. Alderman MacFayden opposes repeal and declines to propose reversal.
Greenwich town seeks to perpetuate the testimony of Treasurer Amos W. Avery due to frail health. Judge Curtis ordered Avery’s deposition for June 16 at 10 30 AM at his home. The move accompanies claims that bookkeeper Louis Lanz embezzled 191 000 from the town using forged and misapplied funds and checks drawn on fictitious accounts.
The House repassed the national budget system bill after changes to satisfy President Wilson. It was sent to the Senate for consideration. In a separate item, two strong earthquake shocks rocked Ferrara Italy causing panic among residents. Ferrara lies about 26 miles northeast of Bologna, a major commercial center in northeast Italy.
Republicans in North Carolina hold a primary to choose between Senator Hiram Johnson and Major General Wood for the presidential nomination. Venice Spain reports the killing of Vicente Sagarra, manager of a mill owned by Count Carat, allegedly fired upon by syndicalists.
Chicago reports Alder man Max Adamowski announcing a bulk sale of $9 shoes to city hall women employees at $4.50 a pair next Tuesday after arranging with a major Chicago company. Men’s shoes will also be sold to city workers at a sharp reduction. New York brief notes two robbers peppered a jewelry store owner and fled with a wallet reportedly containing $100000 in diamonds on Nassau street.
Rear Admiral Albert Winterhalter, member of the General Board and former commander in chief of the Asiatic Fleet, died suddenly at the naval hospital in Washington on June 5. The report notes accompanying city and population figures for Shenandoah and nearby towns with several percent increases or decreases.
About 150 moulders at the General Electric Co. Lynn plant did not report to work in a sympathy strike with the Erie Pa plant. They said similar action was planned at Schenectady and other plants.
City detectives turned in an ambulance call for James Covington, 36, of 206 Knowlton Street after witnesses found him wandering and acting strangely. Dr J A Maxwell of Emergency Hospital investigated and found no medical issue, Covington claiming a very bad toothache as the reason.

Redgate thanks the public and press for backing the department during the vice probe and says the verdict vindicates the entire force. Assistant Superintendent Suckley resumes duties. Lt. Flanagan and Lt. Flood await July 15 and promotion details.
Six new bubonic plague cases were found in Vera Cruz yesterday and two fatalities occurred. Officials report suspicious cases are under observation and an appeal has been sent to New Orleans for anti-bubonic serum and medicines to fight the outbreak.
At Lodge No. 30 meeting the Amalgamated Metal Workers of America voted to discontinue the two week strike at the Leslie Leeds Safety Razor Co on Bruce Avenue. Picketers were removed by union order and none of the former employees have returned. The strike began after a girl worker joined the local union and was discharged by Secretary Phillips, who then ordered a lockout. About half the vacancies are filled by non union workers.
Washington June 5 the merchant bill approved by both chambers after conferees resolved differences was sent to the president for signature. It provides for sale of the government merchant fleet to Americans if possible or to foreigners otherwise. A seven member shipping board would oversee sales and financing options. Americans may pay in installments within a year while foreigners would pay in full within ten years. The measure also promotes private shipbuilding and expansion of foreign trade.
June 5 indications point to New York City census showing a population over six million for the city and about eight and a half million for the metropolitan area. London’s latest estimates for 1917 place Greater London at roughly four million, with official 1921 figures pending.

Local post office letter carriers plan a Foresters hall meeting tonight to act on a bill for higher salaries for clerks and carriers. Clerks meet tomorrow to decide similarly and may telegram Connecticut congressmen. Protestors call the proposed increase insufficient for rising living costs.
Philadelphia June 5 physicians announce Senator Bates Penrose will not travel to Chicago for the National Republican convention. The decision follows medical advice and the senator will remain in Philadelphia for treatment and rest.
