About 1 250 000 idle in the United States due to strikes and 2 000 000 idle for other failures, with a daily loss near 26 million man hours. Strikes, while a tool of labor, drain society by raising prices and lowering real incomes, unless used to improve efficiency and cooperation between workers and employers.
Sentries faced a night of alarms as more than 300 rounds were fired by state guardsmen and snipers near the A. R. shops in Bloomington Indiana. Two attackers hid in a gully north of the plant and fired toward sentries. no one was wounded. Troops to escort non union workers expected, with more companies arriving.
The bankruptcy hearing for Daniel Taft an automobile accessory dealer on North Main Street was postponed to tomorrow due to Morris Metal Products case priority. The first creditors meeting will be held tomorrow before Referee John Keard. A 30 percent composition offer has been made by the bankrupt and creditors will decide on acceptance.
Major C Anderson Wright of the United States Aviation corps former Grand Goblin of the Ku Klux Klan will describe the order’s operations and inner workings in an address at the Park theatre Thursday evening. He will discuss its targets and its history, aided by Lieut. L R Eastman from the New York Police information bureau.
John H Way aged 64 of 519 Water street faced city court for vagrancy after panhandling at Middle and Golden Hill streets. He received five days in jail and a separate trespassing fine was levied against Alexander Fever of 1743 Stillman street for trespassing on railroad property.
Desultory fighting in Dublin ends with Free State troops in control of the southern border area. Regulars repulse ambushes at Loushrea, Clonmel isolated, and Dundalk region reports sabotage of railroad bridges. Republicans active with damaged bridges and a claimed jail escape unconfirmed. Dublin July 11.
Ann M. Klinefelter sues Darien resident Carl Weisheit owner of Weisheit's roadhouse for violation of a right of way on Klinefelter property. Damages sought amount to 2500 plus irreparable property injury. Judge Young issues temporary injunction barring use of the property as a parking area. Case to be heard in Bridgeport Superior Court first Tuesday in September with Justus J. Fennell counsel for Klinefelter.
Mrs Jane Richmond Hotchkiss died yesterday after walking into the water in Fairfield. Authorities question the man she was talking with prior to the incident while the medical examiner calls the death accidental drowning. Further details are pursued on page six.
Prohibition agents conducted rural raids near Clinton and Southbury capturing a fifty gallon still at L A Ritter farm and twenty five gallons of moonshine with paraphernalia. At Charles Englehardt farm three men from Woodbury were arrested for liquor violations. Edwin Brown of New York faced reckless driving charges, later nolled.
Charles B. Counselman of Chicago denies the rumor that his wife, Mrs. Counselman, is to wed Harold F. McCormick. He says they are only close friends. McCormick, head of International Harvester, has been linked to Ganna Walska who recently divorced Alexander Cochran.
Bridgeport residents and youths packed the New Haven freight yards to watch Walter L Main's circus unload its elephants and wagons. The New England favorite, now in its 40th year in the area, drew crowds despite a wrecked past and featured its own lighting, electric power, and eleven elephants watered at a hydrant. Parade was at noon, benefiting local merchants who avoided a townwide parade this year.
Mrs. Anna Sedwick, 451 Hollister Avenue, was struck by a car driven by Peter Reiter at Main and Fairfield yesterday. She is semi conscious at St. Vincent’s Hospital with a brain concussion and possible internal injuries. her son Jeter was unharmed. Reiter, of R. F. D. 15, Steprey, was arrested by the motor police on reckless driving charges and released under bond.
Federal agents are towing four to six battle-scarred cars from western Connecticut to New Haven. The vehicles, seized in 1920 21 for illegal liquor transport, are stored in Stamford and Greenwich garages and will be handled by U S Marshal Jacob D Walters before potential sale.
Government aided effort to place vocational training graduates in positions will set up quarters in Bridgeport. S. A. Renway and assistants to run the local bureau under a new program establishing three vocational schools for veterans. George E K Freeman becomes Local Officer in Charge and Property Officer in the United States Veterans Bureau Bridgeport. Jacob Gormberg of Botsford fined five dollars by Indy Court for driving with faulty brakes after a truck struck a telegraph pole on Harrison street causing damage to the pole.
The Chamber of Commerce Committee on Public Schools backs a five and a half hour elementary day, 200 teaching days per year, and a seven period high school day for all teachers. The recommendation reflects the views of school superintendents from 24 cities and other education authorities, and endorses the board of education’s tentative program.
Judge Banks heard Kelly Tire & Rubber Co affairs with receiver Albert H. Barelay presenting a 25000 claim, City National Bank co receivers filing 17900, and Judge Carl Foster for the bank proposing 19000 at a Rosperal Superior Court session. Hearing expected to last all day.
At Paris a reparations commission discussion suggested a moratorium on Germany’s cash payments for the rest of the year. Dr. Fischer and the full commission, with U.S. representative Roland W. Boyden, weighed a formal request from Germany. A majority expected to approve a temporary moratorium while governing decisions on future payments were left open.
Police believe five men, including Thomas Fitzebbons of 268 Pequonnock Street and Raymond Jerwick of 120 High Street, were involved in the theft of two Colt automatics two Tver Johnson revolvers and tape from American Hardware Stores. Petrino of 42 Lexington Avenue is charged with receiving stolen goods. Two boys under 16 are held. names withheld by state law. The suspects allegedly opened a rear door, took the weapons, and sold one gun to Petrino. They face arraignment in City court.
