Benjamin Zissner of 699 East Main Street was arrested by Enforcement Agent Welch and Captain Charles A Wheeler for transporting eight five gallon cans of alcohol from New York.
Lilian Maud Murray of this city sues Anthony Benjamin Murray formerly of Bridgeport now in New York for divorce on grounds of desertion The couple were married June 1 and the plaintiff seeks judicial relief in the suit filed locally
Peter Mason of Stamford died March 8 while crossing Selleck's Cut tracks on his way to a doctor for an infected finger. Compensation Commissioner E Buckingham awarded about $5700 to Mason's parents, finding the death occurred in the discharge of duties and that Mason was not guilty of wilful misconduct. Ocean Accident and Guaranty Corp had denied recompense, arguing the death occurred while trespassing on railroad property.
New York received two wireless calls from the Bristol City bound from Bristol to New York. The captain said heavy ice blocked passage and there was no steam to break through, asking for immediate aid off Cape Breton. The 2,500 ton freighter with 40 crew departed January 27. Another ship Hewit, 42 crew, is listed as overdue days after leaving Sabine Texas January 29 for Boston with sulphur.
George Morris of 219 Willow Street was overcome by gas while repairing a £ 48 range in Morris and Co basemen t. He disconnected a two inch pipe and before reconnection the fumes rendered him unconscious. Dr. B J Coyle of the Emergency hospital revived him and he was taken home.
A rumor says Governor Lake will send Judge John E. Keeler of Stamford to fill a Supreme Court vacancy. Bets had centered on Judge Lucien F. Burpee, but a strong movement favors Keeler. Keeler was appointed to the Superior Court by Governor Holcomb two years ago in a surprising compromise.
In Waukegan Miriam Rubina known as the talking girl who spoke for over 212 hours shows improvement. Doctors report a dislocated spine vertebra pinched speech nerves. after Dr. Paul Berger realigned it the girl slept and began talking again. Fever and nervous tension receded with signs of rapid normalcy.
Senator Earl B Garlick, who gained prominence in the Elwood Wade murder trial of George B Nott, will act as State's Attorney during the Criminal Superior Court season opening tomorrow. State's Attorney Homer Cummings will be out of state and has designated Garlick to handle the state's cases.
The Free Smokers League reports a successful season amid a burglary at Ralph Oscole's store on 1924 Ain Street where 150 cigars and 20 cigarette packs were stolen. A second break in occurred at Palace Poolroom on Congress Street with unknown quantity of cigarettes stolen. Casualties or suspects were not named.
The trial of Ethel Hutchins Nott may extend until the Supreme Court of Errors rules on Wade appeal points. No date from the State's Attorney. trial likely postponed past May term unless the Wade decision is issued. Attorney Earl K. Garlick aided in the previous murder case and will assist again, but his senate duties limit time. June could be reached for Nott and Johnston cases under these circumstances.
In New York, Justice Ford noted rising divorces with a grim analogy about shedding husbands. The city issued 2,366 divorces in 1920 up from 1,808 in 1919, while 2,699 men filed divorce suits in 1920 versus 2,431 in 1919.
Eva May Swain admitted to Georgia welfare officials that she adopted children from a source in Avanta and that her mother Mrs. E A South aided the scheme. The St Marys Maternity Hospital where the babies were obtained was run by Mrs. M T Mitchell, and Eva May had eleven children including twins and triplets. The husband Willis H Swain said he was unaware the children were not his own.
Washington The health commissioner of New York Dr Royal and Copeland asked President Wilson to curb typhus carrier entry. Secretary Trimulty referred the inquiry to Surgeon General Cumming of the Public Health Service. He will draft a reply for the President's approval.
Washington reports that four American sailors were attacked in Vladivostok on the night in February. Russian criminals carried out the assault, which is deemed not politically important. Admiral Strauss, commander of the Asiatic fleet, informed the Navy Department.
Washington report says the ailing president is a worn, broken figure, no longer the vigorous statesman of two years ago. Public appearances revealed diminished health, though he still found some joy in theater entertainment and music as observers note the decline from former vigor.
