Washington April 27 Senator Underwood of Alabama was elected Democratic leader in the Senate at a conference of Senate Democrats. He ran unopposed as Senator Hitchcock, acting leader since the death of the late Senator Martin, withdrew from the race last week. The party discussed solidarity of action and a peace resolution, with a tentative plan to call a conference to unite the minority on the measure. Hutchcnck will continue to lead Democrats on foreign affairs matters, including the Pearse resolution and Versailles treaty developments. Underwood has led Democrats in the House for four years and has been in the Senate since 1916, now seeking re election. he plans to campaign for a full term.
