Allies claim sweeping German defeats in seven days

London reports the past week as the most amazing of the war with allies advancing on nearly every front. Prisoners exceed 100,000, including 40,000 in the west and 50,000 in Palestine, along with more than 960 guns. Cambrai falls under British guns as Hindenburg line is pierced. Gouzeaucourt and Marcoing seize. A new offensive opens in Flanders with Belgian and British forces taking Poelcapelle and much of the Houthulst forest.

Albert Exhorts Forces to Gain Channel Ports

King Albert urged Belgian, French, and British troops to strike at the Belgian coast. Belgian victories reported at Zerrem, Stadiunberg, Passchendaele, Moorslede, and parts of Westroosebeke as troops pressed toward Routers. More than 3,590 prisoners and extensive war matériel captured. artillery and machine guns seized amid Allied advance.

Outposts of Haig Forces Entering Cambrai

London dispatch reports the Sixty third Naval division reaching the southern outskirts of Cambrai while Canadians occupy the northwest outskirts. Paris notes rising central powers unease over Bulgaria with Todoroff urged to side with Berlin amid possible Austrian retreat in Albania. German forces retreat in Roumania rumors of Romanian revolt and swift removal of archives by German authorities cited.

Yanks in Victorious Smash At St Quentin Front

American troops from New York Tennessee and Carolinas fought along a fifty mile front from Arras to La Fere. They stormed the Hindenburg line on a three mile front capturing Bellicourt and Nouroy crossing the Cambrai canal. British forces pushed the Scheldt defences and gained the hills beyond taking many prisoners while Cambrai remained a focal point. French attacked Chemin des Dames advancing two miles and seizing the ridge summit. Belgians and British captured Dixmude near Niedport enhancing proximity to Ypre and potential effect on German submarine bases. Bridgeport Population Decline Shown in 1918 Directory

City directory data reveal Bridgeport’s population at 183,037 in 1918, a drop of 1,470 from prior year, with 58 percent of residents moving, 10,500 leaving and 8,000 joining the armed forces. Eighty percent of 1917’s gains erased as 15,660 names added previously vanish in this issue. Continued on page two.

New Haven Dining Car Staff Held for Fraud

Thirty two New York to Boston dining car staff including stewards waiters and chefs were arrested in Bridgeport charged with conspiracy to defraud the U S government. Authorities say they used counterfeit dining car meal checks to skim about 20 dollars last year by shortchanging meals and portions. The arrests shocked railroad circles where the system was considered secure. Justice Department agents demonstrated the scheme to show how it operated.

Catherine Mullaly, training nurse at Bridgeport Hospital, died yesterday morning from pneumonia after a three day illness that began with bronchitis. Her home was 21 Catherine Street, Waterbury.

Minnesota Battleship Strikes Mine Off Delaware Breakwater

The battleship Minnesota struck a mine early today off the Delaware Breakwater. There were no casualties and the ship is moving to an Atlantic port under her own power. The navy says the mine origin is unknown but suspected German.
