Soviet delegates lose bid to expand United Nations agenda

The United Nations General Assembly voted to add six debate items despite Soviet opposition led by Jacob Malik. Russia argued the new body undermines the Security Council while the bloc pressed for veto rules and limits on Western proposals. The agenda then shifted to committee review with Vishinsky absent.

Danbury Crash Kills One, Hauls Seven To Hospitals

One man died and seven were injured after a head on collision on Route 6 near Grover corner. George Harrison 63 of West Boylston Miss was a passenger and died on arrival at Danbury hospital. Injured include Harrison’s wife Livey their son William Albert 28 and others. Driver How Knapp 62 of Morgan strange suffered leg and neck injuries. Police report the crash occurred as Knapp’s car veered onto the wrong side of the highway. Continued on Page Eight.

Gaspierik Named Fairfield Town Court Clerk

Edward B. Gaspierik of 67 Dunlea Road Fairfield was appointed by Judge Samuel Friedman to succeed Walter Garrity as Fairfield Town court clerk. He will be sworn in Monday morning before the regular court session. The position pays 750 annually. Gaspierik formerly worked with J William Hope company and runs a business at 83 Fairfield Avenue Bridgeport. He leads the Roger Ludlowe High School Pathers club and belongs to the Fairfield Lions club and Bridgeport Algonquin club. Garrity resigned two weeks ago citing pressure of other work. he held the post seven years.

Sally Sykes Crowned Miss Kickoff at BU Dance

Sally Sykes a 10 year old blond sophomore from Ridgefield Park N C was chosen Miss Kickoff by fellow students at the University of Bilderport during a Gildiron dance in Lenny’s Wagon Wheel restaurant. She competed against six finalists witnessed by 2000 guests from 96 entries.

Collins Named CFL President by Narrow Vote at Conn Union Meet

Timothy M. Collins was reelected president of the Connecticut Federation of Labor for a sixth term, defeating Andrew Christensen 252 to 155 at the CFL's 63rd annual convention. The gathering in the Stratfield hotel also elected 33 vice presidents and named delegates to the American Federation of Labor.

Peron Denounces Yank as Plotter in Argentina Turmoil

President Juan Peron accuses Jorn Griffith of organizing a plot to assassinate him and topple his government. A massive crowd gathered near the First National Bank of Boston building as La Prensa was attacked and arrests were made, with Eva Peron among speakers and the state radio estimating about one million participants.

Navy plane found with all five aboard after 12 days

Air searchers located a downed American Navy plane in northern Manitoba 225 miles northwest of a pass near Highland Lake. All five passengers were safe, walking through the woods. An amphibious plane landed nearby four miles away after dropping a message directing recovery.

Fire Chief's Widow Awarded $9000 in Settlement

Mia M. O Malley of Bridgeport will receive 9000 as part of a Superior Court negligence settlement after her husband William O Malley a Bridgeport Fire Department assistant chief died from injuries suffered during a 1947 blaze at a plant on 839 Railroad Avenue. The suit claimed 20000 against Univeran Sign Co George Baum and Alfred Tearston.

Probate convention set for today in Bridgeport district

The Republican convention for the Bridgeport Probate district meets at the Stratfield hotel at 2 p.m. Today delegates back City Court Judge D Harold Cotter for nomination though a majority may not be won. Democratic incumbent Probate Judge John P Flanagan seeks support from Trumbull Monroe and Easton delegates.

Paris endures a nationwide two hour strike by seven million workers over living costs. In Paris the disruption was limited though a 24 hour subway shutdown occurred and many roads filled with pedestrians and cyclists. Essential services continued with gas electricity and phones operating.
