Bridgeport Public Schools Enrollment Drops This Year

Bridgeport public schools report 668 fewer students than last September while total enrollment reaches 23 432 across 36 schools and programs. School Supt Geraldine Johnson notes a drop from 24 100 in September and 23 277 in June, with desegregation plan steps possibly influencing the population.

Congress Rejects Pay Raise For Judges Aides and Officials

The House and Senate blocked October pay raises for members of Congress federal judges and top government officials by a compromise appropriation bill. The measure, approved by 299 to 94 in the House and by voice vote in the Senate, also repeals a 1 percent pension kicker tied to cost of living adjustments for retired federal personnel.
