New Haven unveils a 20 million renewal scheme by the Redevelopment agency to clear sites rehabilitate and construct new housing and facilities in the Elm City area. The plan emphasizes clearance and construction aims within the city redevelopment program.
The Hague plan proposes clearing dilapidated buildings and rehousing foreigners in Dutch hotels as a step to boost housing and tourism. It notes 1967 arrivals totaled 4,639,000 and 1966 arrivals 4,423,000, with 400 housing units and a new bridge planned.
The city outlines development phases for the riverfront area including new shopping zones and park improvements. The plan would relocate about 72 families in the Fair Haven district as part of urban renewal efforts.
Beartford Connecticut plans to sue the federal government to claim unclaimed postal savings funds now held by Treasury. Attorney General Kilian says the state seeks custody of about 300 million dollars in abandoned accounts and could receive millions if successful, with three other states pursuing similar actions.
Hartford CT AP Gov John Dempsey says Connecticut is being penalized for acting swiftly on water pollution. State Finance Commissioner George Conkling told the Bond Commission it may take up to 25 years for the federal share to arrive, prompting extended bond authorization. Total estimated program cost about 350 million dollars with federal share roughly 43 percent. state has sometimes advanced funds to start projects. Bond Commission approved 41.4 million for pollution central projects, bringing total obligated to 47 million dollars.
Ellington Conn AP Edwin H May Jr urges against defense cutbacks amid Southeast Asia conflicts and rising tensions in Europe and the Middle East. He cites reductions in major programs including the USS Triton, USS Topeka, and USS Randall during a sheriff’s picnic remarks.
The United States would deactivate eight anti submarine air squadrons totaling about 10 aircraft, plus five destroyers and other basic defense ships. Mayield called on the President and Congress to review the orders in light of current international developments.
