American tanks, deployed in brigades on the St Mihiel front, pressed the attack defeating German forces and moving into Nonsard Pannes Lamarche and Binney before infantry. Gasoline supply issues were overcome as crews improvised to push fuel forward under heavy enemy fire.
Local banks received final fourth Liberty loan details from the Treasury. The issue dates October 24 with 173 day first period and coupons every six months at 4 14 percent. Subscriptions require 10 percent at signing and 20 percent installments through January 30. Denominations range up to 10 000 and both coupon and registered bonds offered. Banks to deliver cash by September 28 with emphasis on weekly and government plan buyers.

Hartford September 18 The provost marshal general's office cancelled the call of 613 Connecticut men to Camp Dix New Jersey after Major John Buckley reported only 1723 Class One men remain in the state. A separate call for 1710 men to Camp Greenleaf Georgia on October 7 will be filled.
Bridgeport Local Fuel Board urges use of heavier clothing and delaying heating in offices and homes through early winter to conserve coal. Chair T Z Pardy notes heat plants should start later when possible, with September measures helping weather relief during the season.
The Czecho Slovak drive aimed at 50000 moved past 12157 after day two as divisions report further progress at a Stratfield hotel luncheon. Division A added 970 yesterday, Division B 805, Division C 1553, plus 1285 from the executive committee. Committee members praised workers and noted a donor returned a $2 contribution with a note. St Louis Sept 18 Embargo on shipments of nearly all lumber from any U S or Canadian point to east of the Mississippi and north of the Ohio for war purposes was announced by the railroad administration in St Louis The order allows commercial shipments with permit evidence and is effective as of last Monday Transit shipments will be accepted.
British and French veterans break the Hindenburg line on a 22 mile front, advancing from 113 to 3 miles and taking many prisoners. St. Quentin’s capture appears imminent as Haig’s forces push beyond outer Hindeburg defenses toward Gouzeaucourt and Epehy. French gains on a six mile front deepen the encirclement, while German counter efforts struggle to hold ground near Contescourt and the Cinignon rivulet.
Washington reports German disclaimers of knowledge of Austria's peace proposal while American officials say Germany aided Austria's effort. The note mirrors the 1916 peace bid with Pope involvement and neutral-state notices. Officials expect replies from another co belligerents though not yet informed.
