Mother and baby dead in gas tragedy
Mrs Helen Beatty twenty eight and her year old daughter Irene died in a gas suicide at their home on Alfred street. Husband Robert W Beatty found the bodies after returning for lunch. He reported doors locked and a window entry. The mother had been in ill health for years and recently improved after a Hungary visit. Police say evidence points to self inflicted death by gas while the infant also died in the bed. The husband, an Artistic Bronze employee, was away at the time.

Lewis B Joy a member of the GA BH and one of the era’s last Civil War veterans died yesterday at Bridgeport hospital. Survived by son Scott E Joy and two daughters Blanche Joy and Mrs George Beecher. He joined the Union Army in 1863 at age 16, served in the 17th Maine Infantry and the 1st Heavy Maine Artilleries, honorably discharged September 4 1865.
