Bridgeport reports 18 45 draft registration 35 percent below the War Department estimate of 42 000. Total registered 13 806 Americans and 11 887 aliens. Mayor Wilson registers in his district. arrest at Lincoln School. Day boards Nos. 5 and 6 late with figures amid patriotic spirit and manpower concerns.
Bridgeport posted 25,789 registrations of men aged 18 to 46 yesterday, well below War Department estimates by about 35 percent. Draft boards noted many signups in the 21 to 81 range, with 213,306 citizens and 11,987 aliens signing cards. Local officials called the drive the greatest wartime demonstration, aided by about 1,590 registrars working from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Six airplanes circled overhead during the funeral of Lieutenant Howard K. Hoult, killed in a fall near Art Clemens, Missouri. Planes from Mineola, Texas, appeared in the cloudy sky as mourners gathered at the home of his parents. Rev Waihu Wallk led services at the Universalist Church. the body was to be sent to Clinton, Connecticut, for burial.
Trumbull led nine towns in Fairfield County with 298 men registered for the draft. Registrar H. S. Randall announced at 9:00 that 298 registrants ranged from 21 to 46 years. Of the total, 196 were native born, 26 naturalized, and 42 were aliens. Leon W. Beardsley was the first to register. The intake was conducted by a local board including O. B. Trurton and others.
General Pershing reported American forces in the St Mihiel sector made notable gains with French aid. Prisoners counted at 8,000 as operations continued. American lines moved to five miles in some sectors and captured nearby towns Thiacourt Pannes Nonsard Donmartin la Montagne and reached western outskirts of St Mihiel.
On the Lorraine front the American army advances from Feyen Hay to Xivray with a five mile deepest thrust. Thiacourt Bouillonville Pannes Nonsard and St Mihiel changed hands as French forces recaptured St Mihiel while American cavalry push toward Vigneulles and Pont a Mousson.
American forces conducted rapid operations in Lorraine and the Vosges within the last twenty four hours. Detachments executed a surprise attack against German positions, advancing and applying pressure on the front. Reports describe bold strokes aimed at disrupting German defenses and securing gains.
