Tobacco May Be Produced by French Farmers
Washington reports the French Tobacco Monopoly, dependent on American leaf, aims to reduce foreign purchases. Commerce data show France bought 25,441,000 pounds of Kentucky leaf and 7,183,000 pounds of Maryland tobacco from the United States in 1924, with heavy imports from Algeria and other colonies. The monopoly seeks to cut foreign imports by boosting domestic production and diversifying sources to lessen reliance on overseas leaf.
