A US Associated Press survey over a 13 hour weekend shows 436 persons dead in traffic accidents, 20 in boating accidents, and 30 by drowning. It notes 57 traffic deaths last year, 21 boating, and 54 drowning, with Independence Day and Memorial Day weekends marking high tolls.
Burglars broke in through windows at multiple homes during a holiday spree. Sandula’s home at 905 Ocean Place saw $12 stolen in two incidents. Stanley Niemtec’s residence had a window screen removed and intruders ransacked rooms. Michael Dubos on 15 owards Street lost $130, a .22 pistol, jewelry, and old coins. State police reported five deaths over the holiday period. In New London, 68 year old Nathan Neser was struck while crossing with his one year old grandson, who sustained minor injuries. Neser once ran a tattoo shop in New London before selling to his son. Police noted 269 motor vehicle arrests in their jurisdiction Friday through noon Saturday, including 76 for speeding and six for drunken driving, with 760 warnings issued.

AP reports Silvério Martignani a 34 year old hunter was killed Sunday by his companion whose gun reportedly did not fire though lightning struck the gut and the fatal wound was attributed to the strike in this odd incident.
