Plane crash at Shannon river kills 28 passengers

New York bound KLM Constellation crashes into the Shannon River mudbank at dawn. Of 56 aboard, 28 die, including 11 Americans and 5 other foreign residents. 25 bodies recovered inside the wreck. Survivor count 28 includes 15 Americans. Victims include Elaine Cooper, 54, Bridgeport high school official, among the dead.

Elaine Cooper a Lifelong Traveler Charged by Reds in ’49

Elaine Cooper a 54 year old Bassick High school commerce head for 10 years was among ten Americans who died in the New York bound KLM crash near the River Shannon Ireland. An avid traveler she had just completed a two month Europe tour described as the happiest summer of her life. She had earlier left Bassick for 1946 and 1947 to serve as principal of Lovedh Methodist American Girls' School in Sofia Bulgaria. In 1949 she was listed by Bulgaria as a contact for church leaders accused as spies for the United States and Britain but she called the charges false. Her home was 33 Coleman Street Bridgeport.

Farmington Women Held Posts in Town

Mrs G D S Thompson of 16 Mountain Road, a former Connecticut state representative and ex vice president of the Connecticut League of Women Voters, is a Farmington burgess. Louise Griffith, town librarian and resident at Mrs Thompson's estate, is the other Farmington woman dead in the KLM crash in Ireland.

Uncle of Girl Shoots Man at 2 A.M.

Ignatio Rosa, 27, of Bridgeport, was shot in the chest at 2 a.m. while he says he was visiting a girl at 58 Gilmore Street. He was taken to Bridgeport Hospital in critical condition. Michael Simko, 57, Rosa’s brother in law, is held on breach of peace charges with $10,000 bond as detectives hear conflicting stories.

Dayton news reports Maj. John L. Armstrong, 32, of Fairborn, killed when his F96H Sabre crashed during a speed record attempt at the National Aircraft Show near Vandalia. He had just set a 500 kilometer closed course speed record at 649.302 mph an hour earlier, surpassing the prior mark by Capt. Anders Wester.

Unidentified aircraft flew over Taipei early today triggering an island wide blackout. Three brief antiaircraft bursts were heard as air defense kept silent on the number of planes involved. The blackout lasted from 1:20 a.m. to 4:15 a.m.

Knowland urges Ike move 10 end ties with Russia

President Eisenhower's press secretary said no change in policy against breaking diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union. Senator Knowland called for severing ties after a U.S. Navy patrol plane was shot down by MiG-15s. Nine survivors were rescued and one crew member was missing. Lightning Fire Destroys Boardwalk Shops in Atlantic City

A fast moving Labor Day blaze struck the Atlantic City boardwalk and Steeplechase Pier, gutting seven storefront fronts and damaging four on the pier. Winds off the ocean drove flames across the promenade, with total damages around 225000 dollars to stores and pier facade.
