Connecticut Faces 1930 Highway Build Needed Over 1300 Miles
A state survey by Connecticut Highway Department and the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads concludes that the highway system must be rebuilt to about 1,300 miles by 1930 at a cost between 40 million and 106 million dollars. Traffic is forecast to rise sharply, with autos per person improving and truck use expanding, demanding durable pavements and parallel routes to ease congestion. The Post road from Greenwich to New Haven is the key corridor, with August and Sundays showing peak traffic. The study covers road types, widths, and maintenance costs, and analyzes motor trucking versus rail, noting CT as a major trucking area with most tonnage moved short distances.
