English Channel Swim Again Baffles Woman

London September 1. For the second time a woman attempted the English Channel. Miss Mary Arthur Asminston, daughter of Sir Charles and Lady Fairlco Cuningshame, started from St Margarets Bay at 10 o clock. She aimed for Cape Gris Nez near Calais but abandoned near the South Goodwin sands due to heavy seas and currents. Mrs. Emmitron, the first woman to attempt the swim since Annette Kellerman, was within nine miles of the French coast after 12 hours. Kellerman had earlier made multiple attempts in 1905. Miss Hulls nearly crossed on a water cycle but failed when the machine broke down near the pool. Only Captain Webb and W Burgess succeeded earlier in 1875 and 1911.
