Fu gens Sawyer, 78, claimed originator of the Nick Carter detective stories, died in San Jose. Survived by daughter Mrs. Sheridan. He wrote many dime novels in the 1870s to 1890s and helped shape the Nick Carter and Buffalo Bill era tales. Sawyer began writing in 1868 after meeting Ned Buntline.
