Youth Robbery Suspect Nabbed After Hatchet Stop

Westport police arrested 16 year old William J. M. Laughlin of 74 Newtown Turnpike after a liquor store holdup was foiled. The youth, dubbed the hatchet bandit, was charged with robbery with violence when a clerk whispered to a Bridgeport customer to call the cops.

Fire at Howard Hotel injures residents and firefighters

A fire at the Howard Hotel on Howard Avenue last night injured five residents and one firefighter. Twenty four residents were saved including a 73 year old blind man rescued from Room 29 as smoke and heat blocked routes through the hall. Officials said the blaze began in a lounge lobby area near the bar and spread to three flights before erupting through the roof around 9 PM.

David Miller 55 Clothier Dies After Heart Surgery

David R. Miller 55, operator of David Miller Ltd men s clothing store at 1000 Broad street in New Haven, died Thursday at Yale New Haven Hospital from heart ailment complications after open heart surgery in January. He previously ran stores with his brothers and is survived by his wife Esther and two daughters.

Priest Pours Blood In Draft Board Files Protest

A Roman Catholic priest and three others poured their own blood into open file drawers at a Baltimore Selective Service office to protest U S conduct in Vietnam. They, including Rev Philip Berrigan, said the act was sacrificial and constructive. All four were arrested by the FBI. two released on bonds, two held for a Monday preliminary hearing. Talks Set Today Amid Threat of 4 City Bus Strike

Bus drivers mechanics and office staff of the Connecticut Railway Light Co edge closer to a walkout after a brief session produced no results.
