Bluenose Defeats Elsie For Fishermen's Race Trophy

Canadian schooner Bluenose beat Elsie in the second and deciding race off Halifax Nova Scotia to lift the Fishermen's Race trophy. Bluenose won the series after taking the first race on Saturday, finishing today nine minutes 33 seconds ahead as Elsie struggled with weather and rigging issues. Captain Angus Walters praised Bluenose as faster, while Captain Marty Welch credited Elsie for a plucky effort in light winds. The Boston schooner Mayflower appeared briefly, then lagged in heavy seas.

Mathewson receives $30,000 from New York baseball fans

A $30,000 check was sent to Christy Mathewson who is ill with tuberculosis at Saranac Lake. New York fans donated at a Polo Grounds benefit game on September 20, with total gross receipts reaching about $36,000 and possibly $40,000 including rain checks.
