AFL-CIO leader George Meany warns GE workers may strike after a "mockery" of negotiations. He vows full union support until victory, noting the AFL-CIO is a federation of 121 unions with about 13.6 million members.
Fairfield police captured burglar suspect Coert Houghton 21 of 2032 Burr Street after he barricaded himself in an attic at 3051 Bronson Road in the Greenfield Hill area. Officers arrived after a burglar alarm, heard noises, crawled inside, and, after about 15 minutes, Lieutenant Chervansky forced entry through a barricaded attic door. Houghton faced burglary charges with a $5000 bond.

A 17 year old Harding high senior, John Kiernan of 476 North Summerfield Avenue, was arrested by the Tactical squad after police broke in and caught him attempting to flush drugs. Officers Dailey and Godwin secured a warrant. charges include sales and possession of narcotics and destruction of evidence. Bond set at 10,000 with others present during the arrest.

Leon Maroon 34 of Putnam was jailed on 25000 bond after allegedly attacking his daughter Sarah aged 5. She died from multiple injuries at Day-Kimball hospital after the neighbor rushed her from Putnam. He appeared in Putnam Circuit Court with arraignment set for November 4 in Willimantic Circuit Court and was ordered held at Brooklyn State Jail.
Washington reports a $120,000 grant from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare to Rockville General Hospital for a $2.7 million addition. Rep. William J Onge of Connecticut announced the funding on Thursday.
