The Air Force announced a successful fifth test of Project Far Side, lifting a four stage rocket high above the Pacific after four prior failures. Data collected from the Oct 21 test are under study and no figures will be released before Friday noon.
State's Attorney Lorin W Willis moves to widen inquiry into Trumbull Town court operations by appointing a one man grand jury. Superior Court Judge Raymond J Devlin approves, designating State Referee Walter M Pickett to conduct the probe.
The Navy tested TV2 Vanguard at Cape Canaveral reaching 109 miles altitude and 4 250 mph peak speed after 140 seconds of thrust. Officials say Vanguard aims to place a small satellite in orbit by December and a moon probe by next spring.
Ten year old William Siegmund clung to a rooftop and jumped to safety as flames broke out in a Milford dwelling. He suffered smoke inhalation and was treated at Milford hospital in fair condition. Fire Captain Martin Siegmund was away. fire crews from Point Highest, Beach station, and Central station extinguished the blaze in 10 minutes. The fire caused about 2500 dollars in damage. Fire Marshal Botsford will investigate.
Testimony concluded in the spy trial of Russian Col. Rudolf Abel in Brooklyn Federal Court as the government rested midafternoon. Defense motions were denied, and final arguments are set for tomorrow before a nine to six juror panel. Abel faces possible death if convicted after a nine year period of alleged theft of atomic and defense secrets. Evidence included hollowed objects used to conceal microfilm and the star witness Reino Hayhanen, a confessed Russian officer.
Sputnik's rocket will make three sweeps from south to northeast across the United States after sunset Thursday. Its first pass tracks along the coast from Florida to Maine, then appears east of New Jersey and New York near 9:26 p.m. Boston area lies about 50 miles southeast. A second arc runs from Texas to Minnesota, and a final crossing comes in from the Pacific south of San Francisco ending near Idaho.
Christian Dior, the designer of the New Look, died in Montecatini Italy at the La Place hotel at an early hour after a heart seizure. He was 53 and had spent a holiday week in Northern Italy. The Legion of Honor was among France's honors he received. Dior's empire peaked with a 1953 business of 17 million dollars and his fashion influence remained vast.
Governor Ribicoff and State Highway officials inspected the Connecticut turnpike from New Haven to Greenwich, noting only gaps in Bridgeport. The harbor bridge substructure is near completion with steel girders in transit, and four lanes are projected for opening day. Remaining gaps in the South End and West End can be closed quickly as steel arrives.

Two Ansonia youths fled in a stolen car at high speed from Derby across Route 8 toward the Trumbull Bridgeport line. The vehicle overturned near Intervale road. driver, a minor from Ansonia, surrendered after a police halt order. Passenger Carl Swan, 20, of Ansonia, was stunned but okay. Driver treated at Griffin Hospital Derby for minor injuries. Chase began in Derby after a reported theft by Norman Chenery of Oxford. Police from Derby Shelton and Ansonia and Trumbull area assisted.
President Eisenhower and Prime Minister Macmillan opened a three day strategy conference at the White House from 6 p m to 9 30 p m with their foreign policy chiefs. They discussed aims to counter Russia's scientific diplomatic offensive but topics were not disclosed.

Brownell rejected any political ambition and plans to stay in private life.
A Soviet radio report says Marshal Konstantin Rokossovsky, former deputy defense minister, took command of the Trans Caucasian military area bordering Turkey and Iran. The Tiflis Radio in Georgia announced the posting, not aired by Moscow broadcasts, with no reason given for the assignment.
