The Board of Education last night granted approval to house Anco’s South Tutoring Youth program. Schools involved include Bassick, East Side Middle School, Wheeler, Wallareyilie, Lonafellow, and Wilbur Cross. The compromise set a 4 p.m. closing time to ease tensions and promote peace. Board president Arnor A. Lunin led the program with optimism.
The Greater Bridgeport Regional Planning Agency asked member sites to raise their annual support from 30000 to 48000. The board approved a proportional increase based on a formula of grand list and population, with no current plan for state or federal funding boosts. On the eve of his retirement Lanin was formally elected president of the school board last night. He has served on the board since JMS and as vice president for years. Francis J. King left the board for a court appointment. Lanin cannot seek re election, plans to devote time to voluntary work, and his successor will be named in the November 6 city election with duties starting November 13. Gustafson also retires after a long tenure.
In a City Hall debate at Hall House Panazio defended his administration’s record for the poor. Opponents Mullane Bermeeo and Panazio sparred over housing rent measures equal employment laws and crime to urge recreation and school funding. Also present were several aldermanic candidates and a NAACP leader challenged Ruth over a Nazi-tinged telephone recording.
The State Board approves free bus service for students living five miles or more from school with mid November start. Rosenstein says Mayor Panuzki to announce on unresolved parochial and other busing issues as several hundred students will receive transport. The district allocates over $100,000 for buses, with state reimbursements to follow, and routes to be finalized along with PTA requests for a tele dus.

Stratford police report two tall Black men, each about pounds, robbed the Tumberlands Parma Store at 605 Jucress Avenue Stratford Thames Galaxy. They fled after taking cash and about 10 to 11 cartons of cigarettes, escaping in a waiting vehicle. Patrolmen Force Carthra Connor and detectives Hawaii Norzo Mnyach led the initial investigation.
The Board of Education agreed last night to renew the program for its special policemen for five more months. School Supt. Rosenstein said the comptroller will fund the salaries from local budget funds starting now, temporarily drawing from another account until year end.
