Congress Hopes for Friday Social Security Hike Revived

Congress moved to ease retail costs with a packaging and labeling bill and advanced budget items for education and anti poverty work as part of Johnson's Great Society. The social security hike died but its revival was promised when Congress reconvenes in January. The Senate approved $6.1 billion for schools for two more years, with provisions on deferrals and hearings. The Appropriations Committee added about $100 million to poverty funds and the total bill stood at $5.09 billion, exceeding the House figure by about $177 million.

Mental Health Board Denies Charge In Hospital Case

The State Board of Mental Health rejected claims it offered superintendent John F. Lowney a quiet resignation and denied patients at Connecticut Valley Hospital were used in drug testing. Minutes from Aug 26 and Sep 13 meetings were released. Lowney was suspended then fired on Sep 22 amid political controversy surrounding gubernatorial candidate Clayton Gen.

At a Community Forum in Fairfield University Campus Center Herbert R. Levinson Yale transportation expert projected 1950 Greater Bridgeport area population at 1.3 million with 560000 cars. Truck Crash Drops Silver On Route 1 in Saugus

A silver spill occurred on Route 1 when a truck overturned after a collision with a northbound vehicle. Nelson Godfrey of Providence was driving the truck bound for Alabama. the vault split and spilled about 50,000 ounces of silver worth an estimated 60,000 dollars. Police guarded the cargo as the vehicle was towed to a garage.

Rioting in Oakland: 250 youths run wild at Castlemont High

Rioting and looting erupted in Oakland after Castlemont High School closed early. About 250 youths, many nonstudents, beat five white teachers and three white students, shattered windows, and looted stores along East Oakland streets. In the Mekong Delta near Can Tho 26 miles southeast of Saigon, Viet Cong gunners downed four U.S. helicopters and damaged about 20 while casualties among crews were light. A 2.33 inch rainfall drenched Fairfield county with ongoing showers from Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
