Resolution endorsing national prohibition enforcement passed unanimously despite votes against by New Jersey and Louisiana. Governors call for rule by law to enforce prohibition nationwide.
WEST BADEN Ind Oct 18 A majority of America’s 52 state and territorial governors voted unanimously to endorse national prohibition and pledge full cooperation with President Coolidge in enforcing the Volstead Act. The session ended after three hours of fiery debate with governors moving to Washington for a luncheon with Coolidge. The resolution says observance is the basis of citizenship and enforcement the duty of officials, asserting only federal authorities control liquor importation and urging full national power over raids and border smuggling.
Angelo Mace of Norwalk and five others were taken into custody by Federal Prohibition agents near Nash Corner in Westport after eight gallons of red wine were found in the taxi cab they rode in. Mace admitted ownership and said the wine was to be turned into vinegar for pickling peppers, not alcohol. All four men were discharged as no intent to violate prohibition laws was found. the wine was seized.
Alfred H Renshaw owner of a Darien adjacent estate appeals Judge Haines in Stamford Superior Court to modify a Shubert secured injunction that bars building open air fires within 176 feet of the boundary. The temporary order, issued by Deputy Judge Brinkerhoff, prohibits fires by Renshaw and his agents regardless of wind direction.
Zev the Ran cocas stable brown son of The Finn Miss Kearney will race against Papyrus English Derby winner for international three year old supremacy and a $100 000 purse at Belmont Park tomorrow. Zev was briefly considered unfit due to a skin malady but the Jockey Club committee declared him fit and the American entry will oppose the English champion. Betting favored Papyrus as Zev’s condition remained uncertain though veterinarians found the ailment akin to hives.
Washington October 39 Prohibition Commissioner Haynes announced a new campaign to stamp out home brew usage of syrup bases. He said all brewers must cease making such syrups or face citations and revocation of permits. The campaign targets illicit manufacture of home brew ingredients nationwide.
State police conduct three raids, arresting drivers and suspects in multiple cases including alimony disputes, custody fights, and liquor law enforcement. Derby report: John Vellecca, 80, shot Miss Mary Winn, 19, and her stepfather John Penerwalker, 40, after allegedly demanding she stop seeing others. Winn died instantly, Penerwalker died later, and Vellecca was gravely wounded and dying at Griffin hospital. Police sought a jitney driver tied to the gun purchase.

An east wind gale struck the Cunard steamship Aquitania as it paused near Nantucket today. Two passengers were badly injured and twelve others bruised. Allen G Archer of Los Angeles sustained a fractured left thigh and a patient in the ship’s hospital GQ. A London businessman suffered scalp injuries, and George Gray the assistant purser endured head wounds. Dr Sidney Jones treated all aboard, with Archer and a lag among the serious cases.
Andrew Vincent Barber known statewide as Dad Barber, veteran newspaper cartoonist, is in Bridgeport hospital in critical condition after a nervous breakdown. He has suffered poor health for two years and was admitted last Wednesday.
In Superior Court Judge Haines indicated the Burroughs Memorial Library board may be granted permission to sell the library property to City National Bank for $500000. Two men robbed Antonio Martie, paymaster for Klein Brothers bamboo products, near the concen factory in Long Island City. They struck him with a lead-filled rubber hose and escaped in a car with 2750 dollars. Max Downath, Klein Brothers superintendent, lagged behind and did not witness the holdup. he found Martie unconscious and carried him into the factory.
State police under Sergeant Frank Virelli conducted raids at the Unquowa Hotel on the Boston Post Road, Ash Creek Inn, and the home of Mrs Verona Gezovach on Kings Highway. Investigators had prior evidence of liquor law violations at all sites and seized whiskey and moonshine during the operations.
Dorothy Moody daughter of banker Harry A Moody fell for a fake baron in a Supreme Court action over a $10 000 check partly for 32 love letters. The man, Adan J Muszinski, posed as a baron. his only real job was cafeteria counterman. Moody later married Captain Hugh Barclay.
Adelbert Simp son of this city faced a contempt charge in Superior court over alimony. Judge Haines warned he could be jailed if $100 was not paid in 10 days. Simpson had not paid since last November and owes $490. His attorney pressed for a modification, but Simpson said he was green about the law and sometimes dated other women, though each woman paid her own expenses.
