Queen in Relaxed Mood On Busy Capital Whirl

Damages totaling 350000 were awarded yesterday in Superior court to the families of two girls who died in an auto truck collision in Easton April 25, 1956. The four day trial before Judge Richard H. Phillips and a jury ended with a verdict for Miss Helen Fodor and for the American Union Insurance. The collision occurred at Sport Hill road and Stepney road as Fodor returned from a 4 H club meeting with Margaret Mastroni and Jeanette Stevenson.

Funds Mark Area Work In Norwalk Danbury and Beaches

The State Bond Commission approved allocations for a Norwalk technical institute site and plans, flood control in Danbury and Putnam, and shore erosion work at beaches including Fairfield county spots. Additional funds cover regional technical schools in New Britain Meriden Manchester and a Danielson project with admin and engineering fees for erosion control at Compo Beach Westport and Wood.

Board Adopts Air Rules to Curb Smoke and Suit

The Air Pollution Appeal Board gave preliminary approval to rules curbing smoke and soot and set a two week public hearing under the Air Pollution Control Ordinance that took effect Sept 1. The rules cover installation permits operating certificates for equipment and specify plan submissions and fuel standards for boilers and furnaces.

Solo Flier's Fuel Low Forces Bordeaux Landing

Pilot William Wyatt, flying solo from Galveston to Rome, ran low on fuel and will land in Bordeaux, France. Rome Ciampino officials said he radioed from mid Atlantic he would land after crossing most of the distance. Wyatt cut the trip short due to fuel shortage while aiming to break the 4,973 mile single engine world record.

UN Will Debate Syrian Charges

The United Nations approved a full debate on Soviet Syria accusations that Turkey and the United States plot to touch off war in the Middle East. The 61 to 0 vote with Liberia abstaining set debate on Syria's claims and world peace threats, with opening likely the following week.

Drought loan boards named as Hartford embezzlement unfolds

The State Board of Agriculture names 24 men for eight county Drought Loan committees to review farmer relief loan applications. Nine applications have been filed. Loans range from 500 to 5000 dollars at 1.5 percent interest, with two years of interest-only payments. In Hartford, Irene P. Nagle is jailed on a 17000 embezzlement charge from Hartford Hospital where she was chief cashier. A $10000 bond is set. Audit of hospital accounts has just been completed.

Board Refuses Payment for Hillside Boiler Plant

In a brief session the Board of Public Welfare refused immediate payment of 25 895.43 toward a Hillside Home boiler plant. President James J. McGee said the job must be corrected before funding. He scheduled a vote for the next meeting on November ii to consider contractor corrections and a resolving of the building’s foundation concerns.
