Mayor Panuzio and Alderman Kelley spar over a two year housing program for Bridgeport. Kelley’s four page amendment strengthens council oversight of housing planning and priorities. HUD document controversy followed a heated exchange about source of the paper.
Agnes C. Simons and Samuel Liskov, Democratic endorsed, won party nominations for state representative in Bridgeport's 124th and 131st districts. Simons defeated John Moranski 492 to 352 in the 124th, while Liskov beat Louis Stollman 526 to 234 in the 131st. Turnout was light, under 30 percent in both districts, with Simons carrying three of four 124th precincts and Liskov taking four of five in the 131st.
A GOP walkout climaxed the Common Council debate over naming a city morgue for the West Side. The Democratic majority, with a quorum present, unanimously named Godfrey and Conway funeral home to run the morgue, extending from the Fairfield town line to the Pequonnock river. The original ordinance called for two morgues and two funeral directors, with later amendments shifting appoint dates and duties. Republican minority leader Palumbo announced Potter funeral home as the morgue, noting its West Side locations, before the Oct 2 council meeting.
The United States outlined a long-range goal in the IBM antitrust case to split the multibillion dollar company into separate, competing units. If the government prevails, it would seek to dissipate IBM's market power in the computer manufacturing and marketing structure.
The Supreme Court issued an 8 1 stay reviving Connecticut's 1972 abortion law, restoring it to the books while the state appeals. Opponents question enforcement. Justice Douglas dissented. Hartford officials say the ruling primarily preserves the law pending further review.

The Bridgeport School Board clashed with City Comptroller Roger A. Gelfenbein over filling vacant school positions. Stapleton dismissed the dispute as interdepartmental while noting James F. Stapleton’s ties to the mayor. The board seeks guidance on obedience to the comptroller’s edict requiring his personal approval for vacancies.
The Senate voted a sharp cut in foreign aid, shaving $535.4 million from the $4 billion annual level after House action. Sen. A powerful blast at the Sheraton Hotel in Buenos Aires killed a North American woman and badly injured an American visitor during a commemoration of Juan Peron. The victim was identified as Earl Crozier of West Vancouver, Canada, with conflicting reports on nationality. The incident followed a wave of bombs aimed at officers and officials nationwide.
