Workers Return to Jobs After Underwood Walkout
Union officials at the Underwood company said last night they expect all of the 700 workers who staged a surprise walkout yesterday to be back on the job this morning. The spontaneous walkout halted production at three plants, but most workers returned in the afternoon as union leaders proposed continuing work while formal grievances are discussed. The main plant is at 575 Broad Street with branches at 480 Bunnell Street and 190 Gilbert Street. A contract conference with the company is to follow at Stratfield hotel to pursue the union’s first contract.

Bank Proposes to Change Name to Connecticut National Bank
A special meeting of First National Bank and Trust Company shareholders will vote at 11 a.m. October 25 at 888 Main Street to change the bank’s name to Connecticut National Bank Bridgeport. Directors and the Comptroller have approved the change and proxies have been mailed with an explanatory letter from President Lewis A Shea. The letter notes overflow of business across towns and stresses adopting a name easier for local customers in Newtown Redding Westport Fairfield Stratford Milford Shelton and elsewhere.

Explosion Rocks East Side Area
An explosion near Building 6 Father Panik Village rattled dishes and windows last night at about 9. It was traced to a homemade device the size of a milk bottle wrapped in cardboard and tape with a four inch fuse. Four teenagers on a nearby bench were hurled by the blast. Patrolmen Terrence Flood and John Vitalis lead the investigation, which will continue.

Bomber Crashes at Tinker Air Base. Three Escape
A B-25 on a training flight crash-landed at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City. The trainer burned after landing with engine trouble and an undershoot. Three crew members escaped unharmed. The plane was based at Vance AFB, Enid, Oklahoma.

Honor Comes Too Late for Late Doctor
New York October 14. An 81 year old physician Dr Antonio Pisani who practiced on Manhattan’s lower east side since graduating from Columbia University was named the state’s outstanding general practitioner for the year. The award was given at 9 a.m. but he died at 1 a.m. The doctor had been active in Italian American affairs and was decorated in 1918 by King Victor Emmanuel.
