President Johnson plans to ask Congress to raise Social Security benefits with a 10 percent average boost, not effective before 1968. The proposal could total about $1.5 billion in new benefits, financed partly by a higher payroll tax or by widening the tax base from $6,600.
Britain appeals to the United Nations to reconvene the Geneva conference and press for a peace settlement in Viet Nam. U S Ambassador Arthur Goldberg welcomes the bid and urges all proposals be considered while Washington seeks a de escalation timetable and a cease fire under joint supervision. Brown meets Gromyko in New York to present a six point plan calling for an early peace conference, halt in bombing, Viet Cong participation, and a UN style peacekeeping role.
City Hall hosted a three hour night session where 125 residents registered to vote. Of new registrants 35 joined Democrats and six Republicans. Three sessions remain before the November election on tomorrow and Friday 5 to 8 pm and Saturday 9 am to 5 pm. Last week he returned to Mutual Loan at 485 Main Street and took 150 dollars from the manager and two clerks, locking them in a lavatory before an assistant manager glimpsed the license plate and aided a chase through fences and backyards.
Stratford Town Council Chairman Patrick Keogh announced a $10,000 federal grant for the Metcalf property purchase, part of the Roosevelt Forest preserve. The town paid $51,000 for 18 acres, aided by a $20,400 state grant, leaving about $20,400 the town to cover, includes a house on site.
President Johnson faces a threatened strike as General Electric and the United Electrical Radio and Machine Workers Union clash over a defense plant wage and arbitration dispute. Deputies investigated claiming to witness objects shift and a witness confirming an ash tray shattering. Four deputies later sat for hours with no further events as officials considered seismic causes.
Congress negotiates a compromise bill on Reserve status and callup power for active duty. It would allow the President to mobilize Reserves up to two years if needed, with debate over officer training, funding limits for overseas education, and ongoing Senate-House negotiations to define Reserve strength.

Alvord stays on the Planning commission Irving Goldstein continues on the Zoning Board of Appeals Raymond C. Hargraves Iris Bresky and William J. D Amicol will serve on the Greater Bridgeport Regional Planning agency.
