Ticonderoga torpedoed off Atlantic by U boat survivors recount
Scores of American sailors and soldiers died or were wounded after the steamship Ticonderoga was torpedoed 1700 miles off the Atlantic coast by a German submarine. Survivors describe quick gun action, heavy shrapnel, and all but one of eight lifeboats being riddled. The submarine, a cruiser type with large guns, submerged as boats were crowded with the dying and wounded. The vessel’s survivors reached a British freighter and the report continues on page two.

Hirano Maru Sunk After Torpedo Attack 309 Feared Lost
Japanese steamship Hirano Maru of 7935 tons was torpedoed by a German submarine about 300 miles south of Ireland. Survivors picked up by the American destroyer Sterret report many perished as the ship sank within seven minutes after being struck.
