More than 100 elementary students were rushed to hospitals after inhaling fumes from a furnace at Marlborough School in Kansas City. Many were nauseated and fainted, some unconscious on arrival. Police and hospital spokesmen reported carbon monoxide poisoning effects with no serious injuries. Teachers also fell ill and were treated. most students, mainly fifth and sixth graders, returned home by afternoon. An investigation into the source of the fumes was under way.

Freed Hostages End Hijack Odyssey In Algeria
Five Japanese hijackers released 19 hostages aboard a hijacked Japan Airlines jet and surrendered to Algerian authorities after a six day, 5000 mile flight across Asia and North Africa. The hostages, 12 passengers and seven crew, were reported in good health and smiling as they left the airport. One American, Thomas Phelan of San Francisco, was described as well but with digestive problems from irregular meat. Authorities did not disclose future actions for the hijackers or details of a $6 million ransom handed over in Dhaka.
