Bridgeport Succeeds In $325000 Liberty Bond Drive

Bridgeport reported $325,700 raised yesterday in the Fighting Fourth Liberty bond subscriptions, with $200,700 at noon and growing fast. The goal is $8,841,800 as committees mobilize, with major gifts from Crane Company, Heppenstall Co, and Harris Lodge. The drive targets 2831 residents to subscribe at least $32 each, and national banks pledge substantial support.

Serum for influenza shows preventive promise in New York

New York October 1 Health Commissioner Copeland announced a serum for Spanish influenza that early tests indicate may prevent infection. The vaccine, prepared from influenza germs and autopsy bacilli, will be distributed in small quantities soon. Dr. William H. Park led the work. the serum is not claimed to cure. Copeland warned cases may rise briefly before the epidemic subsides. He noted susceptibility patterns across age groups.

Red Cross to Handle All Christmas Packages Overseas

The Red Cross will oversee Christmas packages for service members abroad. Each soldier may receive one package in a standard 9 by 4 by 3 inch box, with at least six boxes requiring an official coupon and local Red Cross inspection. Bridgeport Man Influenza Victim At Great Lakes

Mrs Alfred Levy of Beechwood Avenue received a telegram confirming the death of her brother at the Great Lakes Naval Station Illinois after Spanish influenza. The 25 year old Bridgeport High School graduate and former Bridgeport Body Co. secretary had a noted service record and was connected with Park Avenue Lodge. Funeral arrangements pending.

800 New Influenza Cases Reported in State

State health board reports 800 new Spanish influenza cases in Connecticut bringing total known cases to 10,000. In the city, 6 percent of new cases appeared in the last 24 hours and seven deaths from influenza or resulting pneumonia were recorded in the period.
