Rochester dispatch reports Colonel Roosevelt, addressing New York Republicans, argues that Alfred E. Smith’s presidential bid casts a Tammany shadow. He urges leaders to lead a drive to dispel it, asserting no such influence exists in the Smith campaign and criticizing Democratic policies and fiscal plans.
A grand jury charged former deputies Char Dobbie and Samuel M Wessell and former McHenry county deputy Loren I Edinger with conspiracy to extort and impersonation as part of a scheme centered on a road house run by Nelius Con Shea and other roadhouse operators. The indictment lists several county officials and roadhouse employees facing charges.
Burglars broke into a storied tobacco shop at 208 Kossuth Street Thursday morning, stealing cigars and cigarettes. Entry appeared forced, with warnings of further losses as police investigate and seek suspects.
Irvin Cobb predicts a third meeting between Gene Tunney and Jack Dempsey will again favor Tunney, arguing that Tunney will triumph with clean literature as the decisive factor.

Coast reports mention a federal warrant charging him with violating interstate film transport law, though no warrants were filed by the U S marshal.
Moscow Sept 30 Associated Press Leon Trotzky was expelled from the Central committee of the All Russian Communist party. The dismissal was recommended on June 25 1827 by the presidium of the Central control committee for violation of party discipline. Trotzky had been censured in May by the Communist Internationale for criticizing Russia policy in China. His removal follows Lenin’s death and ends his role as war and navy commissar with noted martial rhetoric.
Vineland New Jersey report details Dicky Stevenson who turned seven as postman delivered a letter from his late father John F Stevenson Jr a World War veteran and borough recorder The father wrote eighteen letters to his son to be opened each birthday until he marries The nurse Kathryn Stevenson noted the letters hold deep affection and guidance and are read at annual birthdays with care and secrecy
In Salt Lake City Sept 30 an elderly jurist Judge Kiman D Johnson was shot by widow Eliza Simmons as he rose to open court. Three shots struck him after she fired once at the bench earlier. Simmons, overpowered, is jailed without charge while a lengthy note blames Johnson and Senator King for alleged past wrongs.
Miss Lillian Roth of Brooklyn, twenty, in a Stratfield hotel room drank iodine in a suspected suicide bid linked to a love affair with Dr Rosenthal of Brooklyn. She was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital after prearrival notes and notes on the envelope said to be opened by no one but Rosenthal, whose status as an intern in a Brooklyn hospital is unclear.
Rebecca Bradley Rogers, 22, former University of Texas student, faces bank robbery charges in Georgetown Texas. Jurors split on arson and on insanity, nine voting for conviction, others for acquittal on insanity plea. defendant remained calm, indicated disappointment, will return to Austin and then go to San Angelo for work. prosecutor Dolan anticipates possible retrial.
Tax lists must be filed in the Common Council chamber at City Hall before noon today to avoid penalties. Taxable property owners failing to comply face a penalty equal to 10 percent of their assessment. More than 10,000 entries remain to be filed with assessors listing roughly 3,000 more than usual during the period. A daily tally shows 1,582 records charged yesterday, including a parking violation on Hippie Street.

Mrs Eva Kurlansky Shaevitz of Brooklyn New York contests a divorce action filed by Joseph Shaevitz of Providence Rhode Island in Superior court Connecticut. The case cites disputed residency and an alleged accomplice role in the May 2 firing at Redluso Rubber Products company 1483 Main. The wife faces a criminal charge and the action includes a plea in abatement regarding jurisdiction. Continued on Page Two.
Assistant Superintendent Thomas Flood raided a carnival on Kossuth Street and arrested Fraenk Grady of Chicopee on gambling charges. About $515 was found and held as evidence as other players fled. Gundy will be arraigned in City Court. Also a separate incident injured Robot Robins at Ox Hills when a sharp pronged fork pierced his hand. he was taken to the liner Reney hospital.
Rear Admiral T P Magruder says he spoke truth in a magazine piece on naval administration and will not retract. He testerifies before the City Club that public opinion will spur improvements and that he may have offended but accepts possible penalties while denying unfair treatment by Secretary Wilbur.
Enid Oklahoma September 30. Free tonight on murder charges is Mary Atkinson a 26 year old nurse accused of poisoning Mary Jane Bailey daughter of Reverend Charles Bailey rector of Enid. Reverend Thomas Melrose of Cleburne Texas and three Enid physicians are named in the case. Davis Fogleson justice of the peace sustained a demurrer to the state’s evidence arguing the minister’s daughter was poisoned and released Miss Atkinson. A signed statement from the nurse says she bore no ill will toward County Attorney Dan Mitchell who filed the charge three weeks ago or toward the chemist who reported poison in the girl’s viscera.
Maiden Sept 30. Ballard Webster Holt aged 18, husband of a wife who had sued him for non support, died by a self-inflicted gunshot on the lawn of his estranged wife’s home at daybreak. A revolver lay by his side. the shot heard earlier drew no immediate investigation. The couple separated seven weeks after a brief marriage amid financial difficulties. The father, Charles Holt, lives in Lawrence.
New York and St Louis reports differ in scope with a severe tornado near St Louis causing 87 deaths, 600+ missing, and over 6000 homes damaged or destroyed. Officials estimate property losses between 100 and 1000 million dollars, with relief and rehabilitation under way as crews assess the devastation across a six square mile area.
Atlantic City attorney Edison Hedges denied advising Willis Beach to leave New Jersey amid indictments charging Beach with obstructing justice in the slaying of Dr Willem Lilliendahl. Beach, held as a material witness, posted bail and a letter claiming a drug addict confession surfaced in Hammonton. A separate warrant for Beach’s alleged aiding in the murder was issued after he failed to appear for further questioning.
Tax Collector Howard Lenger reported yesterday the city posted historic totals in tax collection with more than 2200 payments and several large checks. Companies including Remington Arma, Crane, Singer Manufacturing, Bridgeport Brass, Locomobile, Bridgeport Gas Light, Poli Enterprises, American Cube and Stamping, American Chain, Harvey Hubbell paid the second installment of the 1926 tax. Yesterday was the final day for the second installment without penalty. interest accrues on today’s payments.
In Brooklyn four bandits attempted a daytime payroll robbery in Williamsburg but were repelled by a lone patrolman’s gunfire and a funeral escort's pursuit. Officer William Rhode protected Grand Mathie Works president William A Shookoff and $11,000 as the car sped away, then a patrolman tackled the fleeing suspect Joseph Butler, son of former assemblyman Richard Butler. The other three fled. Butler was captured.
French Cair of Lone Cedar farm Essex Conn formerly a Bridgeport resident was robbed of a 2 carat diamond engagement ring valued at 4500 while visiting Bridgeport last evening. He and his wife separated briefly. a smaller chipped signet ring with NH initials was later noted. Detectives searched nearby locations but found no trace. The Carrys, previously with American Chain and Crane company, reported the loss to police.
The Young Mens Republican group met at the office of Att orney W F D Kilpatrick to form a committee for the upcoming Republican primaries. About 25 men attended to discuss the campaign strategy against the Republican party machine and push forward for updates on the race.
