Bridgeport’s Community Chest drive closed after 500 volunteers raised 344,545 in pledges and subscriptions, $5,435 shy of the 350,000 goal. The total funds support 29 city charities with a budget of 316,000, aided by rapid last minute pledges and strong industrial and commercial gifts.

After a eight week reinspection by the Civil Service Commission the three top eligibles for Bridgeport postmaster remain Charles F. Greene Arthur F. Connor and Frederick J. Welstine with scores 86.20 78.80 and an unnamed third. The commission found no change in rankings despite protests and will again seek a recommendation from Congressman Merritt.

McCormick elected president of assessor board

At a meeting yesterday Thomas McCormick was elected president of the Board of Assessors with no casting vote. John Caldwell was unanimously chosen secretary and Lawrence J. Gill, the only Democrat, was elected treasurer. McCormick presided and Caldwell served as secretary. Larry Gill was absent and former president GN was invited but did not attend. The change in officers is to be finalized at a later date.

New Yorkers Robbed in Bridgeport on Canada Trip

Mr and Mrs Mathew H Wittkin of New York were robbed of their travelling outfit during a 20 minute stop in Bridgeport on their trip to Canada. Valued around 300 dollars, the theft occurred while they dined near Main Street and Gold Street, with thieves forcing open the car and taking clothing, shoes, and personal items. The couple abandoned their auto and returned home.
